Rahul Gandhi to visit US to 'Expand His Thoughts About Artificial Intelligence'

New Delhi, Sep 5 (PTI): Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi is headed to the United States where he is likely to meet the pioneers of research on Artificial Intelligence (AI), the science of making machines that think like humans. Mr Gandhi, who recently returned from Norway, is gearing up for another offshore visit, this time to the Silicon Valley in the US to "expand his thoughts about artificial intelligence", party sources said.

The sources said Mr Gandhi wants India to lead in the niche area which comes after software development, in which India has already won global recognition.

While AI is still a nascent subject to most in India, many countries including China have begun investments in the area to strengthen research in it.

A senior Congress leader said the idea was to bring back knowledge and implement it at the policy level in the Congress party's vision documents.

Facilitating Mr Gandhi's US visit is the chairman of Overseas Congress, Sam Pitroda, a technology innovator who was brought back to India by Rajiv Gandhi and was among those behind the telecom revolution in the country.

The Congress Vice President had met leaders in the field of biotechnology during his Norway visit.

He is currently grappling with the party's sliding electoral graph after a series of defeats. The Congress is set to lose Himachal Pradesh to the BJP in the upcoming state assembly poll.

The party is weighed down by anti-incumbency sentiments and infighting in the state unit in Himachal Pradesh. In Gujarat, where elections are slated to be held later this year, it lost a veteran when party leader and former chief minister Shankarsinh Vaghela walked out of the Congress.

Mr Gandhi will also address a conference on 'India At 70: Reflections On The Path Forward' at the University of California, Berkeley, on September 11.

Very pleased to learn that Mr. Rahul Gandhi is shortly planning a trip to the Silicon Valley of U.S. in order to expand his thoughts on "Artificial Intelligence".

Technologies initiated by the U.S.A. in the Silicone Valley and elsewhere are indeed unique and precious, and any bilateral Agreement signed between U.S.A. and India in the right direction will go a long way for both the countries to enjoy the mutual confidence and friendship. Silicon Valley has some of the best of Indian brains closely collaborated with many U.S.A. companies, and therefore whatever Agreement Mr. Rahul Gandhi is planning to establish with U.S.A. will benefit both the nations.

India has certainly benefited ten fold ever since Mr. Rajiv Gandhi visited U.S.A. several decades ago and came to Houston, Texas together with the then Vice President George H. W. Bush. They signed the Agreement on high Technology on Space and many other areas which has benefited India a great deal. Agreements such as these create greater confidence and trust with each other, and the trust enjoyed between India and U.S.A. since then has been of tremendous value, particularly for India.

Life of survival for nations such as India and U.S.A. is purely built on mutual friendship and confidence. Both the Nations are bound to gain a great deal and therefore we wish Mr. Rahul Gandhi best of success in his forthcoming visit to the U.S. A.
