SC directs states to appoint nodal officer to curb cow vigilantism

New Delhi, Sep 6 (PTI): The Supreme Court today directed all state governments to appoint a senior police officer as a nodal officer in each district to ensure that incidents of cow vigilantism are prevented and dealt with effectively.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra also directed the chief secretaries of every state government to file a status report giving details of the actions taken to prevent incidents of cow vigilantism.

The bench, also comprising Justices Amitava Roy and A M Khanwilkar, asked the Centre to respond to the submission that it (Central government) could issue directions under Article 256 of the Constitution to all state governments on issues related to law and order.

The apex court was hearing a PIL filed by Tushar Gandhi, great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, seeking various reliefs, including a direction to all the governments to take preventive measures against cow vigilantism.

Senior advocate Indira Jaising, appearing for Gandhi, referred to various incidents of lynching and assault on the pretext that the victims were either carrying or in possession of beef or had eaten it.

She also referred to an earlier statement of Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar that the Central government did not approve of such incidents of people taking law into their hands.

Besides Gandhi, Congress leader Tehseen Poonawalla had earlier filed a similar petition on the issue.

If for almost every serious law and order problem since May 2014 the Supreme Court has to intervene then what is the use of PM Modi, what is the use of the NDA/BJP government at the centre and in the States ? Sack the PM, sack the government and introduce President and Supreme Court rule over the whole of the country seems to be the answer ?

This is the result of the failure of the central Govt and States run by the BJP where these incidents have taken place that the Supreme Court has to intervene on a subject of Governance. It is indirect indictment of the failure of these Govts to ensure Law and Order.

Jeevan, please ask this question to Modi.

Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar said that the Central government did not approve of such incidents of people taking law into their hands. But it is shameful that SC had to intervene for such a thing.

    1. Modi govt approves cow meat for export
    2. Allows cow meat to be eaten by Hindus in Kerala, Goa and North East
    3. Allows many lower caste Hindus to eat cow meat in India
    4. Allows in Gau Shalas, hundreds of cows to die due to food, medicine and neglect
    5. Allows Bajrang Dal to take hafta for transporting cows
    6. Allows cows to die on streets
    7. Allows cows to be abandoned in forests by farmers who cannot afford to feed.
    8. Allows such abandoned cows to be eaten by tigers or leopards in the forest
