Udupi, May 28: Pre-monsoon showers accompanied by thunder and lightning as well as high velocity winds, have claimed the first victim of this season, at Hejamadykody, near here, on Wednesday May 28.
The city experienced a build-up of heavy clouds on Wednesday morning which turned to heavy rains across the taluk by afternoon, causing the death of Krishna D Suvarna (40). Suvarna was struck by lightning while he was working in his plantation at Hejamadykody.
The lightning also damaged his house and plantation. However, the cattle were spared any damage as they were grazing on a hillock some distance away, sources informed.
Taluk panchayat officials including members of the village council have arrived on the spot to assess the loss caused. Padubidri police have registered a case in this regard.
