Death toll from Mexico earthquake climbs to 95

Mexico City, Sep 12 (IANS): The death toll from the recent magnitude-8.2 earthquake that rocked southern Mexico rose to 95 on Monday, the government of the southern state of Oaxaca said.

Citing Oaxaca Governor Alejandro Murat, Xinhua reported that 76 people died in the state, with most of them in the region of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, where the worst impact was felt.

Murat said that about 800,000 inhabitants of 41 municipalities in Oaxaca are affected by the most intense earthquake the country has suffered in the last century.

Another 15 people were killed in the neighbouring Chiapas state and four others in Tabasco, Mexico's civil defence chief Luis Felipe said earlier.

The powerful earthquake struck off Mexico's southern coast late Thursday night.
