Palaniswami thanks Modi for commemorative coins on MGR


Chennai, Sep 13 (IANS): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami on Wednesday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the central government's decision to issue commemorative coins to mark the birth centenary of Bharat Ratna M.G. Ramachandran (MGR).

The actor-turned-politician MGR was the founder of the ruling AIADMK party in Tamil Nadu.

In a letter to Modi, text of which was released to the media here, Palaniswami said: "I express my whole hearted gratitude on behalf of the people of Tamil Nadu and on my personal behalf, for having issued orders to release commemorative coins in the memory of our great leader Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran."

Palaniswami said based on the request made earlier, the Government of India has now issued a Gazette Notification for the issue of commemorative coins of Rs 100 and Rs 5 denomination.
