Udupi / Padubidri, Jun 1: The collapse of a portion of the boundary wall at the project site of Suzlon Energy Limted in Abbedi, has flooded the adjacent farmlands. The incident occurred on the night of Saturday, May 31.
Suzlon is erecting a wind energy plant in the neighbourhood. The aggrieved farmers blamed Suzlon for the disaster and said that the multinational giant had constructed the boundary wall without making provisions for the safe passage of rain water.
They stated that this was not an act of nature, but the inability of Suzlon to keep up its promise of protecting public property. The farmers alleged that the project site had reclaimed an old creek spread over an acre, thus causing flash floods. Also, the storm water drains that existed in Parambodi for several decades have been reclaimed to set up the energy plant.
The farmlands of Sindhu, Honnayya Shettigar, and Domba Amin, located in Abbedi village are under murky waters. Venting their anger, they held the district administration responsible for the sorry state of affairs. The villagers cautioned neighbouring farmers of the imminent danger of water seeping into their fertile farmlands as well.
When Daijiworld contacted a Suzlon officer about this matter, he said that a fifty feet long portion of the boundary wall had indeed collapsed and that repair work was underway. He added that Suzlon is committed to social welfare and would take steps to clear the silt that had accumulated in the farmlands.
