Modi to inaugurate world's second biggest dam on his birthday

Ahmedabad, Sep 17 (Agencies): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Sunday inaugurate the newly constructed second biggest dam, Sardar Sarovar Dam, nearly six decades after its foundation stone was laid, during his visit to Gujarat on his birthday, state BJP spokesperson Bharat Pandya said earlier.

Grand Coulee Dam in the United States is the world's biggest dam.

The new gates of the Sardar Sarovar Dam raise the height of the dam to 138.68 metres.

“Modi will inaugurate Narmada Dam at Kevadiya in the presence of religious leaders and others. Later he will address people at Dabhoi in Vadodara district,” Pandya said.

The prime minister will also address a public rally at Dabhoi, near Ahmedabad, according to reports.

The Narmada Control Authority in June, 2017 granted permission to the state government to close the gates, which will raise water level in the Sardar Sarovar reservoir, after being convinced that rehabilitation of the people displaced due to the project was complete.

This will be Modi’s sixth visit in 2017 to his home state where Assembly elections are due by year-end. Ahead of Modi’s visit, the state will organise Narmada Mahotsav Yatra from 6-15 September.

Inauguration dam is okay but focusing and connecting birthday with inauguration is not necessary.
Birthday is personal mater and should be / may be celebrated with close family members or friends. Once you are famous and done so much for the country, your birthday will be remembered by the nation like we remember Mahatma Gandhi's birthday.

Here are six facts about the Sardar Sarovar Dam that PM Modi will inaugurate on his 67th birthday on September 17th Sunday. The dam has forever been in controversy.
Here are six facts about the Dam: The foundation stone of the Dam was laid by India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on April 5, 1961. It is the second biggest dam in the world after Grand Coulee Dam in the US. The dam has 30 gates and each gate weighs over 450 tonnes. It takes an hour to close them. The dam has already earned Rs 16,000 crore, which is more than double the cost of the megastructure. The dam has storage capacity of 4.73 million cubic metres. The construction of the dam was not exactly smooth. In 1985, the protests by Medha Patkar and other activists slowed down the construction of the dam. The current height of the dam is 138 metres that makes it the biggest structure ever made in the country. The Narmada Control Authority had ordered the gates of the Sardar Sarovar Project be shut on June 16. The gates of the country's highest dam were closed the following day.
The foundation stone for the dam was laid in 1961 by the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, and it took 56 years for the project on the river Narmada in Navagam village to be completed. The dam was inaugurated in 1961 and construction began in 1987.

Sardar Sarovar Project is an inter state project with a terminal dam on the Narmada river at Kevadia in Gujarat. A multi-purpose project with irrigation, power and drinking water benefits, it is meant to serve Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan & Gujarat.

Conceptualized five decades ago,it ran into inter-state disputes, land acquisition and environmental protests and issues related to rehabilitation and resettlement of those displaced by the project—issues that divided public opinion and gave rise to a movement led by environmentalist Medha Patkar.
BJP set to celebrate Narmada dam feat before Gujarat election is nothing but another 'Mangalyaan'.
