Udupi, Jun 4: Nine students of Manipal Institute of Computer Education (MICE) have been selected for admission in IITs across the country, a feat rarely achieved in the twin districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi.
Uttam Bhat is the top rank holder and Mervin Rosario has secured second place in Udupi district.
Overall, as many as 8,652 candidates have been chosen to seek admission for 6,872 seats in IITs. The all-India success rate this year is around 2.77%.
In the previous years from Udupi and Mangalore, there was a general opinion that getting into IIT was impossible. MICE started training facilities for students aspiring to study in IIT and this year it has proved that there are brilliant students in the coastal districts too but there was lack of proper training for these students.
One of the important feature of this year is that reservation for the bakward classes has been implemented and a seperate list of such candidates has been declared.
An extended merit list has been drawn to provide admission to other government institutions like Indian Institute of Space and Science Technology, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, Indian Institute of Maritime Studies etc.
A total of 3,11,258 candidates appeared for the exams which were held in 600 centres across the country.
