M'lore: Providential Escape for Passengers Through Protective Wall

Mangalore, Jun 8: If the bus had moved a little further, the Ullal bridge would have witnessed a major tragedy on Sunday, June 8. Fortunately, nothing as such happened and all the passengers in the bus escaped unhurt in this queer accident.

The incident occurred when a private bus was proceeding to Manjeshwar from the city. The driver lost control over the bus as the steering wheel rod was cut while  on Ullal Bridge. Suddenly, another bus rammed into it from the behind. The bus climbed over the retaining wall of the bridge. Fortunately, it didn’t cross the retaining wall.

If the bus had crossed the retaining wall, there is no doubt that it would have fallen into the river. The bus was jam packed with the passengers. The retaining wall acted as a saviour and succeeded in avoiding a big misfortune.

Sources informed that, two persons sustained minor injuries in this incident. The passengers were seen profusely thanking God for saving them from the clutches of death.

I agree that the bus drivers are reckless but Mr. Mohammed this incident happened b'cos the steering rod was cut and we must blame the RTO, they must start inspecting vehicles every year like dubai if the vehicles are road worthy (Safe) or not?

We all know how buses ply on the nh17 between coondapur to kasargod.Steering rod getting cut is CRAPPP!!!!!!!The Bus driver must have braked hard and the treadless tires did what they could do ...They aquaplanned.ALso the rear of the bus has a dent on the RHS...this means it was trying to overtake the other bus and got hit when trying to cut in !!!!!!I have had close calls on this road so many times and have lost a very close family member on this very spot. Nothing is gonna happen tp this driver ...if he is thrown out by this employer ...someone else will recruit him!!!!! anyways ...awesome pics

This is a miracle we must thank God for the new life to the people on board. There is maintenance for all rotating and moving equipment which is called Preventive Maintenance (PM) and it has to be done at least once in a 15 day’s so that any defect such as wear and tear, worn-outs can be detected and rectified. In this case accident could have been avoided, if there was a preventive maintenance system.

Johnson, be realistic. First thank God that the lives of the passenger been saved. Well, by looking at the picture of the accident and the report it seems that the steering rod of the bus broke and due to this the accident took place. Now based on your nasty comment I feel that almost every 4th guy in dubai driving vehicle tends to make accident and what, the licence be terminated as you mentioned.

I am not buying the story of steering wheel or the tyre end rod getting cut. If this is the case the bus driver should make proper inspection of the fault inform the owner and get it repaired, it’s not momentary that the steering wheel does get detached, definitely it will make some noises and give some indications. The driver should be a responsible person before he drives the bus carrying so many innocent lives and should be booked by authorities for being negligent. These buses specially going towards Kasargoad, the drivers are ruthless and tailgate every vehicle that comes their way, which lead to so many accidents, which are not booked and solved between parties.

These photgraphs shows how God protects us if we have faith in him. Yes, the driver did a splendid job but I am sure there was atleast one passenger if not more was God fearing and because of this one person God saved all. Therefore, whatever we try to do good and wherever we are let us have faith in God all the time. Again, we should not think God will protect us whatever we do. We have to protect ourselves first and if we cannot then we have to leave it to God.

The above incident is shocking. These type of accidents have been going on for years and yet nothing seems to have been done agaoinst this. The bus lobby is all too powerful.Unfortunately in India there is no accountability and these incidents are conveniently forgotten till another one occurs.

The three E'S ,Engineering,Education and Enforcement are lacking in our system.I was watching a programme on BBC yesterday on India's ever expanding automobile market and was horrified to see the accident statistics which has left millions dead or disabled. The will power and awareness is lacking and let us hope the authorities wake up from their slumber or indifference. Till then it is silent prayer on everybody's lips!

How can the steering rod can get cut ? Why brake fail, cutting of steering happens only in India. Because laxity in rulles and regulations? I have been in UAE for last 14 years and never came across a single case of break fail forget about cutting of steering. There are targic accidents but never due to mechanical failures Its only happens due to negligence

I thank God a thousand times for saving so many lives from the biggest untimly tragedy. Really God is great. Drivers of any type of vehicle in mangalore should really think ten times when they drive in Monsoon season specially they should never over take other vehicle. This is my sincere request wth my Mangalore Transport Department.

For sure, many thanks to daijiworld entire team for the beautiful photographs here. Through this, I could really feel my olden days where I used to cross this bridge to reach to Ullal beach. Thanks a ton to daijiworld again.

I feel that the greedy OWNER is responsible for the poor maintenance of buses in M'lore/Udupi than the poor driver. The law must be amended to criminally prosecute the Bus OWNER or at least heavy penalty to be imposed [in this case, the entire cost of repairing bridge has to be imposed on the Owner of the bus with a portion on the driver also] Bus/Lorry Operators mafia is so strong that they have bought RTO officials & ensure that KSRTC volvo a/c sleeper buses do not get passed by RTO, as per my source inside KSRTC.

this is very bad reckless driving by the private bus drivers. we can stop this by only disgarding the so called timing , for every minute and because of which the public has to suffer. So I request the Mangalore Transport department to take some kind of systematic rules or lay down some guidlines. If the driver is reckless in driving then his driving license should be terminated
