Udupi: Pothole on Parkala road claims toddler's life

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Oct 3: A toddler had to pay the price of negligence on the part of authorities with his life. In a gory accident which happened at Parkala near Manipal on the evening of Monday October 2, the child in question, identified as Chirag, lost his life because of despicable condition of the road.

Chirag was the 18-month-old son of Umesh Poojary and Pramoda couple from Pitrody, Udyavar near here. Umesh was riding the motor bike while Pramoda was seated in the pillion with her child in her arms, when the accident happened.

When the couple was moving towards Atrady, the wheels of the bike skidded when negotiating potholes dotting the highway opposite Panduranga Tower in Herga, Parkala. Both Pramoda and Chirag fell to the road in the accident. The child, which suffered grave injuries to his skull, passed away.

Most part of the road from Syndicate Circle at Manipal towards Parkala and farther has become unmotorable on account of potholes and damaged stretches. Several protests organized by activists and organizations have failed to force district administration and government to address this problem. One hopes that the death of a child might at least awaken the authorities from their slumber and force them to act before more such tragedies happen.

Both Umesh Poojary and Pramoda have been admitted into KMC Hospital Manipal for treatment of their wounds, which are not of serious nature. A case about the accident stands registered in Manipal police station.

The state highway between the town and Agumbe was upgraded as national highway No 169A due to the efforts put in by Rajya Sabha member, Oscar Fernandes, during the fag end of UPA government's regime at the centre. The road was converted into national highway between Malpe and Thirthahalli. However, neither has the highway been repaired since then nor work on national highway begun during the last four years ever since. Several protests including a few led by social activist, Nityananda Olakadu, who tried to attract attention of the government to the problem by way of undertaking fishing and swimming in stagnant water of craters former on the road, have failed to evoke any concrete response so far. Though the road was temporarily repaired, it has deteriorated again due to rains.

Karnataka Rakshana Vedike had held protest on September 16 on this issue, and the authorities had promised then that the road repair work would be undertaken within ten days from then. Even after two weeks since the deadline elapsed, nothing has been done to mitigate hardships of road users.

The people are angry at their Lok Sabha member, Shobha Karandlaje. Many are heard commenting that she is not visible in her constituency in general and the district in particular. How many more deaths would it need to get the government to do something to address this issue, people have been heard wondering.

Very sad.On such roads one has to be careful not to drive with a Pillion and a infant in arm.when not a pothole ,anyone can come from opposite side and dash which I personally experienced.and to a infant it is fatal .did they wear a helmet at all?what about baby? Now dont blame the politicians but ask the contractor why he didnt do a good finish?where were all responsible person for it.?Now bring the contractor and throw him in this pothole.Noone cares when the contract is oover to control .why blame now each other? How many lives have to be offered to this ?Dont allow any politician to come that side for votes.Rush into the panchayat or Shobakkas office and ask to clear this.

This is not a state govt responsibility. This is national highway . You should ask why Modi , Shobakka, Gadkari are not doing something to improve this road. Do not blame state govt for this. Modi just talks and no action. Same thing can be said about Mumabi railway station stampede tragedy also. He wants bullet train to help diamond merchants of Gujarat and is not bothered to improve basic infrastructure requirements of railways. Stop following Modi and BJP blindly.

It is completely wrong to assign state roads to national highways and wash their hands.
It looks like very shrewd attempt by politicians to divert responsibility.

This is very very sad incident . May almighty God give strength to this couple during this tragic moment.

Our MP Shobakka is busy in playing communal politics. Worst MP of Udupi . She could have done something for this road, since this road is NH and comes under central govt. Part of the road from Inox Manipal to Parkala should be fully concrete. Tar road will not work for this segment due to very heavy traffic and rain.
Dear MP please wakeup , a small angel has to pay the price . Do something at least now .

It is pity that Indians do not have proper roads even after seventy years of independence. All rulers after independence filled their pockets. It is sad that we send satellite to Mars but cannot construct a proper road which is basic necessity of life. Karnataka had great engineer like Sir M.Vishweshrayya who build dams, roads, canals all over the world yet today we are not able to construct a proper road which can withstand rains.

Please look into this before the situation gets out of hand. Stop giving false speeches, And for god's sake, dont do any politics on this matter!

From now on wards, every time there is a death or grievous body injury due to the poor state of road, the victim's family should file an FIR against the CEO / Exec Engineer in charge of that particular section of the road. Insist on application of Sec. 304A of the IPC (causing death by negligence).

An FIR against a public official itself would block his career prospect. Further, if a public official is arrested for more than 24 hours, he gets suspended from service. These two factors should wake them from their slumber. Or else nothing is going to change; and we will just be reading another death in the next couple of days.

This is the inefficiency of our MPs. What is the point in upgrading it to national highway if it doesn't meat minimum width requirements...
Looks like state doesn't have any funds to do road repair . They just want to point fingers at centre

In the last 20 odd years, could you please tell if you could remember that the roads (SH or NH) in and around Udupi / Managalore regions were in perfect condition for a at least one year?

What difference does it make whether it is BJP or Congress?

The fact is that implementation on the ground is done by bureaucrats of NHAI and PWD. It is next to impossible to nail these ba#@!ds for their negligence / inefficiency / incompetence. Have you ever heard of a NHAI / PWD officer being dismissed for not doing his job properly? At most he may be transferred to another office or face delay of 6 months in his increment. Pagaar aata rahega; retirment ke baad pension milta rahega; ooper se 2-number ki kamayi has already given a big buffer at retirment. sabh chalta hai attitude is so deep in every department that neither Modi nor Siddharamiah can do anything about it.

Just look at what happened in Mumbai. 23 people dead and not even an FIR against one employee of the Railway. Now tell me, why would any bureaucrat even bother getting out of his AC office?

Our MLA is doing good works throughout his constituency, during his tenure, a lot of development works happened around Udupi and I do applaud our previous MLA Mr. Raghupathy Bhat and Dr. Acharya for the development works they have done but sadly the MP we have elected is only busy with communal agenda's and not been seen in any of the functions she has been invited whether its government sponsored programmes, any inuagral programmes of educational authorities or any private party, her name is there in every invitation letters we receive for the programmes but she is absent in all of the programmes except her party sponsored programmes in and around Udupi and I hope she is no more interested in central politics and looking at some new constituency to elect for state and become minister and increase her fortune. It's a National Highway and it comes under her jurisdiction and what MLA can do in this regards.

I strongly blame both Mr.Pramod Madhwaraj and Shobha K for death of a baby, if they had shown little interest towards society, small baby would have survived...Hope, at least now, they wake up and do the needful..
