No serials on Aarushi please - Nupur Talwar

New Delhi, Jun 10 : Upset over the telecast of a vulgar MMS on Noida twin murder victim Aarushi Talwar, the government on Monday issued a showcause notice to news channel ‘India’. The channel has been given 15 days to reply to the notice and could even face a temporary ban, and more action is likely against other TV channels and a production house.

The information and broadcasting (I&B) ministry said they found the content “obscene, defamatory and denigrating of children and against good taste and decency’’.

Meanwhile, Aarushi’s mother Nupur Talwar has lodged a strong protest with the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights against TV channels and a production house. Talwar has complained that TV channels have “perpetuated’’ the character assassination of her daughter started by the investigating agency (the UP police). Saying the production house was planning to incorporate the murder as part of a TV serial and “glorify honour killing’’, Nupur has demanded an apology from TV channels and demanded strict action against them.

The UP police have alleged that the teenager had an affair with Hemraj. In fact, a senior police official had described Aarushi as “characterless’’ as her father. These comments earned the ire of several social organizations as well as women and child development minister Renuka Chowdhury, who has demanded that the police officials using such “loose language’’ be suspended.

On Monday, Chowdhury added that it was “unfortunate’’ that the murder was being exploited for commercial gain and said she would take up the matter with Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi.

In her letter to the WCD minister, Nupur has said, “ They (the production house) plan to glorify the concept of honour killing, a thought which is absolutely abhorrent to any educated person.’’ “Does the media have the right to vitiate public opinion to the extent that an innocent person is made the victim of salacious machinations designed to increase TRPs of the channel?’’ she asked, adding “the tragedy that our family is going through is a grave one. But the greater tragedy would be the inability of this country to regulate the pillars of democracy to ensure fairness, and justice for all, dead and living.’’

NCPCR member Sandhya Bajaj has written to the I&B secretary asking the production house be restrained from making such a serial till the investigation is over.

Lie detector test on Talwar’s compounder   

The CBI on Monday conducted a lie detector test on Krishna, compounder of the Talwars’ clinic in Noida, virtually putting him in the category of one of the suspects in the twin murders. The test was conducted as sleuths noticed inconsistencies in his statements. The agency has also asked newspaper organizations to share “still photographs” of the crime scene relating to first two days of coverage of the incident (May 16 and 17) with it so that it can get some clues to unravel the mystery behind the twin murders.
