Board exam for CBSE Class 10 to be reintroduced: HRD minister Javadekar

Puri, Oct 7 (PTI): Board examination for Class 10 in CBSE schools will be reintroduced as part of the ongoing reforms in the education system, Union human resource development (HRD) minister Prakash Javadekar said Friday.

At present, it is optional for CBSE students to choose either the board exam or a school-based examination.

It has also been decided to conduct examinations in Classes 5 and 8 and students who would fail in the end-term examinations would be detained in these classes, Javadekar said in Puri.

However, the students would be given an opportunity to improve and appear for another examination before being detained, the Union minister said.

Under the existing arrangement students up to Class 8 are promoted to the next class irrespective of their performance.

The minister said 25 states have approved the central government’s move in this regard.

    The education system in India is burdening on the child. Everyday my son in class IV carries a school bag weighing about 10 kgs. He follows the time table. Each subject has two to three books plus note books plus books for computers, GK, Moral science etc. . I check his bag to ensure that extra books are put in. but each text book is so heavy!
    The CBSE syllabus is very difficult for an average child. It is like putting mental pressure on the child so far as academics is concerned. I strongly feel that the education system should cater to the development of an average student and the level of education should match the age and mental ability of an average child. My elder son hates to study social studies. When I force him to study it, he asks me “why do we need to study soc. sci., will learning about wars, battles, the rulers names, the dates they were fought, help us in anyway?” Some of the things they study don’t even exist viz. the telegram.
    Sadly in a day most of the time is spent in school and after coming from school kids have to spend time doing homework, and monthly studies / exams. There is hardly any time left for sports or games. The level of education should be balanced as per the age and mental ability of the child giving enough scope for the holistic development of the child which includes playing also.
    The world is pacing at a faster rate. The countries are getting more advanced. Why is our CBSE syllabus still the same and difficult ? Do we realize what can happen to a child who is less than an average student? They tend to fall out in class. But they do not have the capacity to grasp further or remember what they are taught. Such students cannot be sent to special schools.
    It’s time that the leaders of our education system open their eyes and make learning an interesting experience for our children. God bless our kids especially the Tenth Std. students this year who have the entire syllabus to learn for the final exam !
