Jharkhand criminal held in Gurugram


Gurugram, Oct 11 (IANS): A criminal from Jharkhand who carried a reward of Rs 5 lakh on his head was arrested here on Wednesday after a brief gun battle, police said.

Akhilesh Singh, 38, a resident of Jamshedpur, was taken into custody along with his wife, Gurugram Commissioner of Police Sandeep Khirwar said.

A police team headed by Gurugram Deputy Commissioner of Police Sumit Kumar and Jamshedpur Superintendent of Police Phrabhat Kumar cordoned off a guest house in DLF area early in the morning.

The criminal was staying there with a 25-year-old woman he claimed to be his wife.

"In a bid to escape, Akhilesh Singh opened fire at the police team. The police retaliated and Singh got two gun shots in his legs," Khirwar told reporters.

The criminal had reached the guest house on Tuesday night.

As many as 56 cases of murder, attempt to murder, loot and extortion have been registered against Akhilesh Singh in Jharkhand.
