Can't allow Sabarimala to become Thailand, says temple chief; faces flak

Chennai, Oct 14 (Zee News): Travancore Devasom Board chief Prayar Gopalakrishan has sparked a fresh controversy by saying that women born in decent families should not enter Sabarimala even if the apex court lifts a ban on their entry inside the temple.

''There is nothing personal. Both safety and rituals are equally important. Even if the court says that women aged between 10 and 50 can enter Sabarimala, we are sure that no members from a dignified family will step in,'' he was quoted as saying by media reports.

Hitting out at his critics who have slammed him for making such crass remarks, he said, "Don't try to make Sabarimala Thailand."

The Travancore Devasom Board chief made these remarks while speaking to the media in Kottayam during which he suggested that if women are allowed to enter the temple, Sabarimala will soon become a tourist centre.

What will be the situation if women between the age of 10 to 50 climb uphill under challenging weather conditions without any safety? Should we make Sabarimala a Thailand", he reportedly said.

He made these remarks on a day when the Supreme Court decided to refer the matter relating to women's entry inside the temple to its larger Constitution Bench.

Reacting to it, he reiterated that women of menstruating age should not be allowed to enter the temple.

The order was passed by a three-judge bench of Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, Justices R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan. They framed several questions to be dealt with by the Constitution Bench, including whether the temple can restrict women's entry.

The apex court also sought to know if restricting the entry of women violates their rights under the Constitution and amounted to discrimination against them.

The temple, situated in Pathanamthitta district, restricts women aged between 10 and 50 from taking the pilgrimage to Sabarimala temple. In January 2016, the court had questioned the ban, saying this cannot be done under the Constitution.

It would be advisable for people of other religions not to compare Thier religion to Hinduism...
It's a fact that Hinduism has allowed other religions, faiths to flourish in this land...record of Christianity and Islam is very poor in this regard in other countries...

    Mahesh,

People diverted from Hinduism to other religions not because they were let to do so, but to escape oppression. Look at Dr. B. R. Ambedkar's history, you will realize what I am trying to say. At the same time, only migrated religion to other countries from India is Buddhism, you may check their percentage in the Far-Eastern countries to know its flourishing.

As for your suggestion, why its others' problem when Tripple Talaq is concerned ? Why the matter becomes women's oppression, not Islamic ? Therefore, be prepared to be measured by same yardstick when it comes to matters related to you.

There is a limit to restriction imposed on women - whether its driving in Saudi (which the present member of ruling family understands and promises to abolish) or imposing covering every limb of her body (because the possibility can be that other males see them). Similar is ban on women entering a certain shrine.

Its the suffering women who should fight against this restriction, not the general public. Until/unless women rise above and fight against this discrimination, things are not going to change.

How is it safe for women beyond 50 (and girls below 10) to climb uphill ?

By drawing comparison with Thailand, the priest implies flesh trade. He should have not said that if he has any reverence to the shrine. Because a male pilgrim must practice refrain from physical relationship for a specific number of days. As such, women alone can't create Thailand-like situation. Do not put the entire blame on women for human practices endured mutually.

Temple chief crossed the line and limit using a friendly country name! Please remember Thailand grants Indian citizens visa on arrival. Thailand has respect for India probably due to India's Buddhist links! It is easy to break a clay pot, lot more labor to prepare it.
