Kundapur, Oct 25: A record of sorts was created at Goddess Mookambika temple at Kollur in the taluk, which is considered to be one of the richest temples in the state, when the money collected in donation boxes of the temple was counted on October 24. The money collected for this month amounted to Rs 1,10,66,278, which is a new record in the history of this temple.

The practice of counting money collected through donation boxes once a month is being followed at Kollur temple. Normally, Rs 70 to 80 lac is received here in one month. The record so far was Rs 1.6 crore collected about 18 months back. This record has not been broken till now. It is gathered that foreign currency notes worth over a lac of rupees were also found during the counting.

The temple also attracted more number of visitors during the last month on account of various festivals like Deepavali, Navaratri, Ayudha Puja etc and also because of government and school holidays.

President of temple managing committee, Harish Kumar Shetty, said that the number of visitors to the temple during the last month was heavier than previous months. He said that the foreign currency notes found in donation boxes also included currency notes of USA, Australia, England and Gulf countries. The priests admitted that with the increasing visits by devotees, the number of services offered to the presiding deity of the temple is also on the rise.
