NIA files chargesheet against Zakir Naik for inciting violence, hate speech

New Delhi, Oct 26 (Agencies): The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday filed a chargesheet against Islamic preacher Zakir Naik for inciting terror and hate speech.

The investigating agency booked Naik, who left the country in July last year, under charges of inciting youths to take up terror activities through his programmes on Peace TV and hate speech.

The 51-year-old televangelist fled from India on July 1, 2016, after terrorists in neighbouring Bangladesh claimed that they were inspired by his speeches.

The NIA had on November 18, 2016, registered a case against Naik at its Mumbai branch under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. His Mumbai-based NGO, Islamic Research Foundation (IRF), has already been declared an unlawful association by the Union Home Ministry.

Naik is said to have acquired citizenship of Saudi Arabia but this has not been confirmed yet.

The controversial preacher has also been accused of funding terrorists and laundering several crores of rupees over the years.

Naik, a medical doctor-turned preacher, during his interactions with the Indian media from broad has repeatedly denied all the charges.

The Centre had also banned his Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) after it allegedly made derogatory remarks against Hindu gods and extolled al Qaeda terrorist Osama bin Laden.

Besides banning his NGO, the central government has taken his TV channel off air.

The Interpol was approached against Naik after a year-long probe during which the NIA gathered evidence on his IRF and Peace TV being used to allegedly promote hatred between different religious groups.

The passport of Naik was also revoked by the Ministry of External Affairs at the request of the NIA earlier this year.

The NIA had thrice issued notices under the Code of Criminal Procedure section 160 to Naik, asking him to join the investigation, but he did not appear before it.

The section authorises a police officer to call somebody if it appeared the person seemed to be acquainted with the facts and circumstances of the case in question.

Thereafter, on April 21, the Additional Sessions Judge presiding over the NIA Special Court had issued a non-bailable warrant against him. On June 15, the court issued proclamation order seeking Naik's appearance before it.

After Naik failed to comply with these directives, the anti-terror agency requested the Ministry of External Affairs to revoke his passport.

The Mumbai-based preacher came under the lens of security agencies after some terrorists allegedly involved in the attack on a cafe in Dhaka in July last year reportedly claimed they were inspired by his speeches.

The Indian government should have clamped down on him many years ago.

Interpol should hunt him down and he should be put on trial, and when found guilty he should meet the same fate of another terrorist Yakub Memon.

The 'botched and blinkered ' past of the NIA's new chief Y.C.Modi.
Senior IPS officer Y.C. Modi, who helped investigate the assassination of former Gujarat home minister Haren Pandya in 2003, has been named as the head the NIA – India’s premier counter terror agency.

The Pandya investigation led to the conviction of 12 persons under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. They were all subsequently acquitted by the Gujarat High Court in 2011, having spent eight years in jail.
In the final event, nearly 15 years later, despite Y.C. Modi’s exertions as the head of the CBI team – or perhaps because of them – nobody has been punished for the daylight murder of the senior BJP leader.

Y.C. Modi was also part of the SIT that probed some of the 2002 Gujarat riots cases. He is expected to hold the post until May 31, 2021.

The outgoing chief Sharad Kumar had taken over as the NIA chief in April, 2014 and was set to retire in October last year. But the cabinet appointment committee, headed by Modi, decided to retain him as the NIA chief on a contractual basis. “Kumar’s extension as the DG of the NIA is unprecedented. This is the first time after the implementation of sixth pay commission that a uniformed police officer holding the post of DG was given an extension.
Salian, the former special prosecutor, had claimed in a recent affidavit that a NIA officer has asked her to ‘go soft’ against the accused in the Malegaon case. NIA chief’s tenure extended to divert attention from Hindutva angle in Malegaon blast probe?
Islamic evangelist Zakir Naik case was based on media trial held by Arnab Goswami rather court of India based on the Bangladeshi media which retracted it later. The terror case was later changed to money laundering to ban his organisation.
Pravin Togadia, Pramod Mutalik, Sadhvi to Modi's Governors, union ministers and state Chief ministers are known for anti-Islamic speeches. Why the NIA and Home Ministry is selective in charge sheeting and prosecution?

Zakir openly insulted other religions, with some quotes. Govt should have taken action that time itself. How come he ran all of a sudden if his teachings were so true??? He should prove it now in the court of law.

Western countries banned him decades back

He is not hiding coz he is afraid of anyone. Every one knows where he is. Hope u understand the meaning of hiding well. Hiding is some one whose whereabouts are unknown, here in this case every body knows he is in GCC.

The second reason for not appearing in India trail is, we all know what is happening with other innocents here in India. Many innocents spent several years in jail only to be proven later as innocent. Why should he suffer when we all know he is specific target from the so called Fasicts regime misusing the power of Intelligence departmet which is dancing to the tune of Anti Muslim government.

I believe even u will do the same if you were chsrgesheeted for no crime of yours in any of western or GCC countries and would have never returned there forever with a fear of bring arrested. By the way western and GCC countries never play with any innocent or make false charges.

Its was one of the hidden agenda of nagpur team . Silly reasons have made against him just to curb his popularity which have been increased day by day among non muslims aswell. The brahmin dominated forces in the center could get through when non muslims embrace islam during his public speeches.

I used to watch his programs in Peace TV few years ago. At that time I did not notice him saying anything in support of terrorism. I don't know if he has changed recently.
I stopped watching his program because most of the time he was talking about comparative religion and I was not interested in that subject . I also did not like the way he criticized other religions.
According to NIA, some terrorists said they were inspired by him. They have to say exactly in which speech he conveyed them that message. If it is true he should be punished.
If he is innocent he should have come back to India to face the trials.

This is not a attack on zakir naik but it's a attack on muslim community. NIA doesn't have any proof to justify that zakir naik preaches hate and violence. None of his speeches preaches hate or violence. Zakir naik only spreads peace. He is trying to unite hindus and muslims. For the sake of argument if we agree the charges of NIA against Zakir naik then what about below:
1)Sakhshi Maharaj's all speeches contains hatred against muslims
2)Dr.Praveen Togadiya is same as Sakhshi maharaj
    3)Varun Gnadhi
    4)Sadhvi Prachi
    5)Raja Singh
    6)Pramod mutalik

None of the above has been booked for their hate speeches. Only why dr.zakir naik??? Why this double standard against muslims.

If he is innocent , why is he running away? He even did not attend his fathers funeral on the fear of being arrested. He is banned in many countries, including Bangladesh for inciting hate. Only in India , he had immunity during the KHANgress rule. What sort of a charecter he is. Now his time is up. Arrest is not far away. He will be dragged out of his hideout soon.
