Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (GA)

Mangalore, Jun 25: The first-ever customers’ meet of MCC Bank, Kankanady branch since its establishment in 1971 was held at the premises of the branch on Tuesday June 24. Melwyn D’Cunha, the chairman of the executive board of the bank presided over the meet.

Shalet Serrao, the present manager of the branch welcomed the gathering. Dr Edward Nazareth, the director-in charge of the branch informed that the Kankanady branch is one of the best amongst the 16 branches of the bank. The Kankanady branch has been projecting profit for the last many years even though the bank itself is in loss. At present the branch has about Rs 18.5 crore as deposits and has advances to the tune of Rs 6.15 crore.

He informed that in the previous financial year the branch has Rs 22 lac as the profit. After the present executive board has taken the charge, the branch has shown tremendous growth. In the last three months the deposits have exceeded Rs 1 crore (the total of the last year) and the advances are almost to the same amount. He complimented the staff of the branch for their honest work, even though they are underpaid. He regretted that the management cannot help in this regard due to statutory restrictions, which he hoped would be overcome soon.

Customers expressed their opinions about the bank as a whole and the branch in particular. They gave several suggestions for the better services. Melwyn D’Cunha, the chairman informed that the team comprising himself,  John Rodrigues, the vice-chairman, Valerian Rodrigues  are now  working more than the staff in the head office and are trying their best to put the bank on par with other banks. He promised that the shareholders would get dividend from the present financial year (which was not paid in the last 5 years). He also informed that the bank would be able to accept deposits from NRI customers and that would be a boon to the bank.

He clarified that the bank has profit in the last financial year but as the accumulated losses were more than the profit, the bank is still under loss. This loss would be made good in this year and the bank will march ahead with profit in the days to come.

Customers expressed their happiness over the gesture of the present management in holding the customers’ meet and stressed that such meets should be a regular affair.

Sujith D’Souza, staff of the branch proposed vote of thanks. Victor Mathias was the master of the ceremony.
