Mangalore, Jun 26: Link De-addiction and Counseling centre in association with the anti-drugs cells of various colleges will be organizing a “Monsoon Rally against Drug abuse” on June 26, the International Day against Drug abuse.
The Monsoon Rally is organized to sensitize the general public, specially the students and the youth against the growing menace of drug abuse in the city and its negative impacts. The event is organized by Link Anti-Addiction Movement in collaboration with various colleges in and around the city.
The world observes June 26 as the International Day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking. “Do Drugs control your life? Your life. Your community. No place for drugs in my life” is the slogan suggested by the United Nation’s office of Drugs and crime (UNODC), which suggests “controlling drug production and distribution” as the special theme for this year.
“Monsoon Rally against drug abuse” will start from Balmatta grounds, near Shanthi Nilaya Hall at 3.00 pm which will be culminated by a public gathering at Nehru Maidan (Cricket stadium) at 4 pm. During the public gathering, the participants will be submitting a memorandum to the district administration and police department with some suggestions to curtail the drugs menace in the city. Besides this, an oath-taking ceremony and symbolic burning of drugs and inauguration of the anti-addiction cells in college campuses and anti-drugs campaign for the year 2008-09 will be conducted.
Mangalore south Yogish Bhat will administer a symbolic burning of drugs and district superintendent of police, Satheesh Kumar N will conduct the oath-taking ceremony and deliver a message. Dr Ravish Tunga, leading psychiatrist will deliver keynote address and Ronald Colaco, founder president, Link Anti-Addiction Citizens Committee will preside over the meeting. Recovering drug users from Narcotics Anonymous will address the students and give their anti-addiction message.
Some 24 colleges, including medical and nursing colleges are taking part in the Monsoon Rally.
