Mangaluru: Uncertainty looms on Kambala as PETA alleges violence at Moodbidri event

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Nov 13: Animal rights organization, 'People for Ethical Treatment Animals (PETA)', has decided to complain to Supreme Court that the buffaloes which participated in the Kambala held at Moodbidri in Dakshina Kannada district on Saturday November 11 were subjected to violent lashes. PETA,which had shot photos and captured video footage of this flood-lit Kambala, claims to be having evidence for the violence inflicted on animals during the said Kambala.

This development has given rise to a apprehensions afresh in the minds of Kambala lovers. PETA has decided to submit five photos taken at the Kambala venue which was held near Kadalakere Nisargadhama, Moodbidri, in support of its claim. The petition filed by PETA seeking to annul the ordinance issued by Karnataka government allowing holding of Kambalas will be coming up for hearing in Supreme Court on Monday November 13.

Photos released by PETA

The Supreme Court, which had admitted the petition on November 6, had served notices for personal appearance of central and state governments in the court on Monday November 13 hearing. In a statement released to the media, PETA leader, Nikunj Sharma, said that the organization is convinced that buffaloes were hit and treated violently at the Kambala held on November 11.

"About a hundred buffaloes were forced to take part in the said buffalo race. They were hit with canes and their tails were pulled. The fact that several of the buffaloes were hit before participation in the Kambala was evidenced by the injury marks seen on their bodies. Even injured buffaloes were used for the races. The buffaloes, after finishing the race, had become breathless," he stated. He added that five to six persons were seen to be making an effort to bring the buffaloes under control by holding their reins tight and beating them up.

"They appeared like being under tremendous pressure. They were forcibly dragged into slushy field. In case of some buffaloes, twisted thick ropes were seen to have been inserted through their nostrils which naturally hurt them a lot. These buffaloes need protection by Supreme Court," a release issued on behalf of PETA stated.

In the meanwhile, convener of Kambala Academy, Gunapal Kadamba, asserted that animals were not treated violently at the Kambala at Moodbidri. He accused PETA of coming to the venue backed by prejudice, taking some pictures, giving them publicity on a large scale, and planning to block holding of Kambalas. "Kambala does not support expression of cruelty anywhere. There are many instances in which animals are handled in our country cruelly. PETA is better advised to concentrate on those flagrant violations," he said.

Ashok Rai, legal counsel for Kambala, said that Kambala activists too have prepared records to prove that nowhere animals were treated violently at the said Kambala. He said that these will be submitted to the Supreme Court during the hearing. He explained that as per the current instructions, representatives of police department and tahsildar of the taluk were present for monitoring the developments to ensure that Kambala was held strictly as per norms.

Dears, One thing is confusing me since years.
I believe and respect all the religion and their faith.
But one thing still under thought process, if someone eat meat or kill particular animal is crime. I agree.
Same person use it for international commercial purpose the same animal it is permissible, and torture that same animal for some fun purpose is also permissible...
    what is happening...
Is some smart people fooling all of us? or is really faith of Indians?
Do anyone have excel sheet of animals been transferred to animal shelter?
Sorry for inconvenience, nothing against to any person or religion.

Any international NGOs coming to India and advocating us on how to function needs to be banned! Its simple, PETA is just a front end supported by business industry to ban events like kambala, bullock cart race, jallikkattu, etc. Ask why? A large portion of these buffaloes and bulls come into the beef sector and consumed by a big chunk of people in India. Also note, India is one of the major beef exporter. Lets say, they ban kambala and other cultural events that involve these animals, their population will decrease as no one wants to own them to race, plough the land, etc. the number of animals serving the beef sector will decrease. What will happen to all the beef eating people? Will they stop? Maybe not, but how will they procure beef? Here comes the catch, our people now buy beef which is imported from foreign countries and that too from the same companies which supported NGOs like PETA and other NGOs to ban these sport events. There is a big debate in the dairy industry, why milk from Indian cows, especially naati and jersey tastes better and nutritious than breeds like Holstein. So, PETA and its push to ban kambala is nothing but BUSINESS, everything else is a big hoax!

PETA is against cruelty towards all animals including horses. In fact, they aggressively campaign against horse-racing not just in India, but throughout the world.
And before someone suggests, they are not against beef - They are against beef too. They also ask people to be vegans, that's to not consume milk products as well.

It is not a horse race. It is Buffalo Race. " Indeed the buffaloes are malnourished tortured whipped not vaccinated and illtreated. Buffaloes are meant to give milk not run like a horse." one must go to enjoy the Kambala then it will be clear.... there is story, emotion, drama and so on.... these are male Buffalo and they are all like sportsmen well cared for and fed all the=rough the year and do not do any work ( not used to plough the fields). AND male buffalo so far do not give milk...;). it is a gentleman sport for the village folk and people outside villages do not understand it.... India is predominantly a Rural Economy based on agriculture and farming....

If look objectively PETA is right.Of course animals are meant for human utilisation in the form of food item or to serve him in agricultural activities .Animals can be used for this purpose .However animals cannot be used as an object for entertainment of human by inflicting pain on it.Though the owners of buffalo rear them with utmost care and concern still when it is used for racing the owners beat them and prompt it to run in the race which is akin to cruelty animals

PETA is a foreign funded NGO. Any organization which interfere with tradition should ne banned. My parental house owned these types of buffalos and the way owner treat them during non events is some thing which parents doesn't do for kids. They spend lakh to manage them, for their food, oil massage etc. In a event, whipping is common so as to make them run faster. It is a matter of prestige for the villages to win event. My teachers even used to whip us during high school but we never complained about it. Now I feel, if not for whipping I would not have been what I am today.

At times, I think the so-called PETA is going overboard with its thinking and actions and dragging things which are not in the best interest of the majority of the people in the coastal area. A lot has been said and done but if they continue in the same vain I am sure this will lead up to many such things….in the near future where not only Kambala but many similar age-old traditions will completely disappear from the coastal Karnataka.

    Dear PETA,

Your concern for buffalos is understandable but not acceptable.

It is part of our culture. There are hardly handful of places Kambala happens in DK, not more than 7. That means 7 days in a year. Rest of the 357 days of the year it is luxury life for these buffalos.

If you are successful in getting a ban on this event (which will be unfortunate), first ones to curse you will be these buffalos. They will curse you 357 days and praise you for 7 days in a year.

    May god save your 'soul'.

Secondly, have you ever seen while ploughing a filed using the buffalos??? (note, Kambala buffallos are not used for ploughing , keep in mind), the man who ploughs, please check how much beating they get? mind you , it is every day.

Are you going to stop that also??

Yes, any form of violence on animals should be stopped.
How do you like yourself being raced through muddy field with whipping from behind and everyone shouting at you? Subjecting to mental and physical torture even for few minutes every year is cruelty.
Long ago, even Sathi was part of our culture. But when developed civility, we had let it go. Now, being educated and reasonable, we should let Kambla go. We do not need entertainment at the cost of an innocent animal being tortured.
