Udupi, Jun 27: Farming activities are on in full swing with the moderate monsoon setting in over the coastal district and peasants are engrossed in earning a livelihood. Paddy cultivation in the remote areas of the district has also picked up.
Processes such as sowing seeds in ploughed fields, irrigated during the summer, were completed ahead of the monsoons. This preparedness paid off and a timely monsoon made early planting of saplings possible. In many areas outside of the district farmers are still sowing seeds, and are yet to plant the saplings.
Also, this year, there has not been a shortage of agricultural labourers to undertake chores such as planting saplings. But there is a likelihood of such a shortage in the next few days since all the farms will be busy simultaneously.
The age old method of ploughing by oxens or buffaloes is widely prevalent across the district, though a few progressive farmers with medium land holdings use tractors. This has added a touch of modernity to paddy cultivation.
