Mission Kuwait-Mangalore Direct Flight Accomplished - What Next..?

Daijiworld Media Network

Mangalore, Jun 2: As the news of online booking of Kuwait - Mangalore direct flight spread, there was heavy rush to Air India express website to book the ticket. Some were disappointed because system was not accepting the foreign credit cards. But officials of AI Express assured of rectifying the error soon.

AI Express has now launched the first flight by announcing flights on every Thursdays and Sundays. The mission is completed and many individuals and associations have put in their efforts towards realizing this dream of lacs of Mangaloreans living in Kuwait. Despite all euphoria surrounding this maiden flight, if one looks on the other side, there is indeed a great fight going on between many to claim the credit. But actual credit perhaps must go to Air India Express, Kuwait Airport authority, Mangalore airport authority along with the individuals and associations who followed-up the case and not any single individual.

On this historic occasion Daijiworld spoke to a few leaders of the associations who were available for comment along with Capt P P Singh, COO of AI Express, M R Vasudeva, director of Bajpe International Airport and Chellam prasad, Air India Manager, Mangalore.

Here are their views:

Capt P P Singh
COO - Air India Express:

I am happy that the dream of Mangaloreans in Kuwait has finally been realized. We have been trying for this route eversince the first flight to Mangalore was launched from Dubai. It had some delay owing to internal technical things, route problems, seat-sharing issues and other general issues. Now our next goal is to fly Saudi - Mangalore. We hope that even this dream too will realize soon.

M R Vasudeva
Airport Director
Bajpe International Airport:

It is another feather in already glittering cap of Bajpe International airport. I have been receiving good support from all angles for development of Mangalore airport. We have approved landing of Kuwait flights and now I am happy that we are connected to one more destination. We have assured our complete support to other pending destinations too. We have tremendous increase in traffic to Mangalore from abroad as well as domestic routes. Terminal 2 work will be completed as scheduled in March 2009. Though the rain has spoiled continues work, I am confident that we will reach the goal soon. I am happy to inform that now our fire fight section is working in 2 shifts. My boss Rama Lingam in New Delhi has kindly approved for the second shift which is another development for us.

Chellam Prasad
Manager - Air India Mangalore

Thank you Daijiworld for your support. We will plan some grand programme on the July 17, 2008 at the Mangalore airport. We have been trying hard for this destination. In my previous press release I have mentioned that Kuwait direct flight will happen by the end of July. Now I am happy that it has happened much before that. Let us hope that we will have good load from this destination.

What is next? How about US Indians of Mangalore origin to directly fly to Mangalore connecting with AI Express in any Middle East airport? That should be the next dream AI Express should work on granting through booking with other airlines. We are waiting for the USA-Maangalore Indians to travel bypassing Bombay. Then truely Bajpe would achieve the Internation airport significance.

By reading your comments I was vey much impressed to know that you do have a quite a good knowledge about what is happening in the aviation industry It is nice that you have been giving the credit to the governments they deserve it . Now let me give me my experience well I have worked in Mangalore for Jet airways for 6 years and I had seen absolutely nill development in Mangalore it was only when Mr Vasudeva Airport Director Mangalore started the Development at the same time I reached Dubai working for Emirates Airlines it was then Karnataka NRI forum was formed in Dubai with the support of 30 organisation and took the lead in Dubai and was making things to happen with the Goverments specially acquiring land sanctioning of funds etc. Beleve it or not I was just calling the ministers and the infrasturecuture seceratary every second day and seeing to it our airport files is always on the top.

The support I have got from Mr BR shetty and Mrs Grace Pinto was tremendous. Whenver I want things to happen I try my best or else I will try different tactics Coming to Jazeera Airways how can they get permission if they have not included Mangalore in the Bilateral agreement and also there is nothing called TOP Temporary operating Permit.

So there was no possibility that they would get the permission during that time. Well now things have changed there are good possibilities of them getting in the near future Media specially daijworld.com has played major role in this mission Coming to the delay in getting flight to Kuwait there were several technical issues which I would not like to comment. Before I conclude as the proverb says “Crying Baby will only get Milk” So Associations make quite a difference

I remember my first travel from Mangalore to Kuwait was by sea, the only link 40 years ago thus this news of the first flight brings me immense joy. My credit goes to the governments of both the countries. As the population grows, and the world shrinks with globalization and modernization each government provides infrastructure to their nationals in a better way to keep pace with this growth. Accordingly, Govt.of.India upgraded the Bajpe Airport to international standards, after which a few arlines offered to provide business.

For example, Jazeera Airways being the new concept of budget airlines in Kuwait, studied all possibilities and even issued a flight schedule. They handed this to the associations that approached them to obtain the landing permission and Bajpe Airport with the Indian Govt. These events explained, took place 1.5 years ago. And to this day, these associations were not successful. In this context, the comments made by Mr.Alfred Lewis, "Government projects like this dont happen at a few people's or organization's request" is 100% correct. Hopefully, more international carriers will be granted permission in order to provide better and cheaper services and make Mangalore Airport the busiest airport. I thank the media for bringing awareness of the world events to the general public and I invite Daijiworld to be a part of this first flight.

I cant see the air india express flight schedule to mangalore. It shows only the booking schedule dated 17th july 2008. while going for the other dates, I do not see the destination Mangalore in the destination column. I think again Mangaloreans are going to be fooled again. But this time if Air Iindia Express cancels its mangalore flight. It would be responsible for any situation that occurs.

Mr Alfred I dont agree with you regarding your comment. well the organistions are quite handy to do such movements. I Do understand when i was around 17 years old i have heard about Mangalore becoming international airport but why it took another 20 years to become international? where were all the politicians?? well now evertything in place everyone would like to take the credit.

Now coming to kuwait flight when I had first approached Capt PP Singh after the first flight to dubai he said I really didnt know that there was so much of potential in Mangalaore. and as the 3 flights going full I requested for 2 more flights he willingly gave it and then he built and confidence with me. when I requestd abudhabi and muscat flight he willingly gave it. and then Doha and Bahrain was qutie easeir. when it came to Kuwait flight it was a little diffucult task the reason because of the bilatareal agreements between the two countries (normallly a special team is allocated between the two countries)I do agree with you that all airlines do a feassabilty study and then they publish it in the MOU(movement of understanding) as and when there was a bilateral between Kuwait and India either jazeera airways or Kuwait Airways have not mentioned in the MOU but indian carriers can operate from any place in India to Kuwait so it was only Air India could operate. I have been in requalar touch with Capt PP Singh and he used to assure me that there would be a flight via some point because of the load restriction and he has kept is promise.

The support from Organisation..... Well alhough me sitting in Dubai asking for flights to kuwait is of no use. the support rendered by UAKK was too extreme. I do understand UAKK was formed specially for the direct flight we have been in constant touch with air india officials and finally the assurance was given once the new aircraft joins the fleet on june 23rd this aircraft would be didicated to mangalore kuwait via muscat and Abudhabi since Abudhabi had requested for one extra flight. but it has not worked out because of NOTAMS(notifaction to the Crew) so the only possible way is to operate via muscat. since I am in the same aviation feild it is more easier for me to all these things for the community and i would be conituing the same

Dear Readers, Sincerely thanking D.G.C.A, Kuwait for eventually making this dream of the South Canara community come true. At this point, I take this opportunity, to shed light on the ground realities of this historic link between Kuwait and South Canara This movement was first initiated by Kuwait Airways and Jazeera Airways who laid the foundation through research, action plans and negotiations with the Indian government.

Unfortunately, their negotiations were received with deaf ears and so this movement came to a stand still. Thereafter, Kuwait issued an ultimatum to halt all flights to India (Quote Kuwait Times dated 23rd June 2007 & The Times dated 29th June 2007) because it alleged India's backtracking of bilateral aviation agreements between the two countries. The breakthrough happened when the Ex-Chief Minister of Karnataka Mr. Veerappa Moily visited Kuwait to analyze the need for this sector and he gave his solid recommendation to the Indian Government after which Air India Express stepped in to offer the flight and the open sky policy of Kuwait Government enabled this dream to materialize.

In conclusion, I would like to thank all the persons who worked behind the scenes and whose efforts are bearing fruits now.

You are right Jerry. I travelled in some of the foriegn airways and when I compare the service provided by Air India Express is worst compared to others. If you compare the ticket fare it is comparetively on higher side. And they charge you even if you have one kg excess luggage...worst think I ever saw. We want Jet airways/ Kingfisher to be introduce to Middle East. We dont want Monopoly.

I think from the media publicity and the way everyone working on this issue looks Mangalore Air India Express gets undue publicity while their service record is very poor. Keep the customers delighted. Treat customers king not that we treat you (Air India Express) as doing some favour for all Mangaloreans in the Middle East. Please do not allow they become monopoly else they would take all of us for a ride by hiking the price or ticket fare. Remind you, no one is traveling for free.

As people thank each other and hints as to who was responsible and who is not, for initiating the Mangalore-Kuwait flight, there is one thing the Mangaloreans dont seem to have realized. Government projects like this dont happen at a few people's or organization's request.

A government airline will see the profitability and feasibility of a route and deploy its plans the way it wants. You can only draw the government's attention to a plan but you cannot force it to do it. This was quite evident in case of the Kuwait Mangalore route.

Why so ,much publicity about a launch of direct flight between two cities. When all the air-lines are making huge losses due to rising fuel prices, it makes just comon sense to run flights which are in demand and profitable. I appreciate the efforts of all involved. Attention to airport modernisation, expansion and developement of the infrastructure facilities in the bajpe airport and should be given top priority.
