Mangalore, Jul 3: Jismy Anthony (12) from Kanhangad Kerala was travelling in a bus and waving her hands gleefully on April 28, when a passing bus hit her arm and severed it from the body, turning her into a disabled person. But now she has become able bodied again, thanks to a microvascular surgery that the doctors, most important among them being plastic surgeon Dr Dinesh Kadam at the A J Hospital in the city, conducted on her that day itself.
Briefing the newsmen at a press conference on Wednesday July 2, Dr Kadam informed that the 12-year-old girl was taken to Kanhangad district hospital along with with the amputated limb where she was administered first aid. She was then shifted to A J Hospital for advanced treatment. He informed, that most of the people involved in such accidents lose their severed limbs as proper care is not taken to preserve the limb. If the amputated part is cleaned up and preserved in ice in a polythene cover and is brought alongwith the patient to a hospital having facilities for such surgery within six hours of the incident, chances of the limb getting rejoined is quite high, he explained.
The team of doctors who were involved with this eight hour long operation included Dr Sridhar Shetty, Dr Sanath, Dr Rajesh and Dr T V Tantri. The girl is under post-operative care is is all set to be discharged from the hospital soon to lead a normal life, Dr Kadam stated. It may be recalled, that the hospital has conducted many rare plastic surgeries in the past successfully including replanting of private parts.
