Mangaluru: Passenger caught smuggling gold worth Rs 24 lac in footwear at airport

Mangaluru, Nov 27: The officers of customs at Mangaluru International Airport here on Sunday November 26 thwarted an attempt to smuggle gold, and arrested a passenger.

The accused passenger has been identified as Ahmed Tahir, a native of Kasargod.

Tahir arrived from Dubai on Sunday by Air India flight IX 814.

The customs officials found 804 grams of gold worth Rs 24 lac concealed under the sole of Tahir's sandals.

The customs officials intercepted the passenger out of suspicion. He arrived from Dubai by morning flight and during checking, the scanner detected the gold. The officials found the gold concealed in his footwear.

The passenger is a frequent traveller. Sources said that he confessed that he smuggled the gold on the request of another person. A launched a probe regarding this, the source said.

A case has been registered under Customs Act and further investigations are on.
