Kundapur, Jul 4: Subraya Achari (50) from Moodkalakatte near here, who was at large after he eloped with a young woman from Shimoga a few days ago, ended his life on Thursday July 3 by jumping into a well at Hakladi near Haladi in the taluk.
The police had been on the look out of for Achari, after a case had been filed by the parents of a girl from Kodanakatte near Sorab in Shimoga district, alleging that he had abducted their daughter. The accused, who claimed to be a Naga Patri having special powers to invoke the Serpent God on himself and having proficiency in sorcery, had assured the parents of the recently-married woman that he would see that she gets separated from her husband by using his powers, as requested by them. After organizing some worships at Sorab, he told them that the girl needs to be taken to Kundapur for conducting further rituals. The parents obliged by sending the girl along with her younger brother, but Achari gave a slip to the boy and managed to take the girl with him, after reaching the town.
A team of Sorab police who were on the look out for Achari, came to Hakladi after getting information that he was staying there. It is said that he bit the hand of the policeman who was holding his hand, and in a hurry to escape from them, jumped into a well and lost his life. The police sub-inspector who too jumped into the well to save Achari, was brought out with the help of locals unharmed.
Udupi deputy commissioner Hemalatha, superintendent of police Devajyoti Roy, Shankarnarayan police station in charge Sursh Kumar, Kundapur sub-divisional officer Ramesh etc., visited the spot.
