Kundapur, Jul 5: The workers from the taluk, engaged under the mid-day meals scheme of the state government, staged a protest recently, in front of taluk panchayat office, pressing for meeting of several of their demands. CITU taluk unit led the protest, organized under the banner of Kundapur Taluk Mid-day Meal Workers Union.
The protestors then submitted a memorandum addressed to the state government, to the taluk panchayat secretary. The memorandum lists out demands like payment of minimum wages as promised, granting of maternity leave and allowances, life and health insurance cover for workers etc., The union also holds itself against entrusting the scheme to private organizations as it would snatch away jobs of thousands of workers.
Das Bhandary, honourary president of the union, Sharada Devadiga, Shashikala, Jyothi Koni and Shanti Menezes and others were present on the occasion.
