Bengaluru: Five double decker bus routes from city including Mangaluru identified

Daijworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Dec 12: Five routes which have the potential of running double decker buses as part of public transport system have been identified in the state. These are among more than 70 such routes identified by the union ministry of road transport and highways.

The destinations which the department feels have the potential of operating such buses from the city happen to be Hubballi, Mysuru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Mangaluru. Some other sectors that have been identified for this purpose are Delhi - Jaipur, Visakhapatnam - Bhubaneshwar, Kohikode - Kochi, and Delhi - Agra. The department has prescribed maximum passenger capacity per each of these double decker buses as 82.

The specifications prescribed by the ministry for such buses mention that each of these buses shall have two service doors in the lower portion with a minimum of two emergency exits on the upper deck and lower deck, in addition to escape hatches.

The ministry notes that several countries have of late been giving impetus to operating such buses as part of their public transport system in order to reduce the number of cars using the roads and also to provide comfort and convenience to passengers. The initiative of the department comes close on the heels of a statement issued by minister, Nitin Gadkari, on his plans to reduce private vehicles on the roads by introducing double decker buses. He had said that by extending comfortable journey to people at a reasonable cost as an alternative to operating their own vehicles, people can be discouraged from buying new vehicles, which in turn reduces load on the roads.

The idea of DDBuses is for me very doubtful and dangerous.Think of fullhouse and down and up the ghats.Oweh, suppose some problems on shiradi Ghat, like last time one accident.Hope they will make one round with this bus before introduce to the public. All electric connections and bridges ,On a even route no problems. But our roads are like a snake, heavy traffic,God help us.

Please note padil tunnel is designed as per minimum height required by calculating maximum height of heavy goods vehicle plus head room of 0.20 mtr. As per indian road standard 5.5 mtr is the allowable height tunnels are provided. If heavy goods vehicles are overloaded then there is a problem. Padil tunnel is constructed using latest design without removing railway track as this railway line is main track for konkan railway and which cannot be closed for number of reason.

DD buses r absolutely not suitable for Mangalore's topography n overhead electric supply wiring!!

BEST is to phase out DD buses by 2020 as they consume 55% more fuel than SD buses!!

Good. At-last we have come to a situation of taking more passengers at a time. However, attention needs to be give to the pot holes. Else, the first ones to be tossed out will be those seated on the higher level of the bus.

For the buses to ply on regular roads the basic requirements should be wider roads and no trees. This bus will not allow standing.Only sitting.Just sit on the top of the deck the experience should be wonderful.
