Bengaluru: 38% of people aged above 40 died due to pollution in Karnataka, says report

Bengaluru, Jan 5: Pollution is a silent killer in India with over 27 percent people dying because of it.

According to 'India: Health of Nation’s States 2017', in Karnataka alone around 38 percent of people aged above 40 have died due to pollution-related lifestyle diseases.

The study was conducted as the India state-level disease burden initiative with contribution from the Indian Council of Medical Research, Public Health Foundation of India and Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.

In Karnataka, 37.2% of people in the age group of 40-69 and 36.8% over 70 years old died due to cardiovascular diseases in 2016, the study reveals.

Chronic respiratory diseases are the second biggest killers. The state also records the highest deaths due to cerebrovascular diseases.

Meanwhile, another study by Commission on Pollution and Health, also indicates a rise in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases (COPDs), cancer, diabetes and other ailments due to increase in air pollution.

While eminent cardiologist Bangari Girish stressed on creating awareness to control pollution and use of e-vehicles, Dr Narendra, Test Physician, Global Group Hospitals warned that CODPs are high-risk diseases, leading to death.

    Sadly politicians have sold out our twin districts to mega pollution industries.Kids and aged people are suffering and silently their lungs are getting choked every single day. All in the name of development and jobs. People who got jobs in these industries will also realize someday if they lose someone of their own.COPD is a slow killer disease for which there is no proven cure so far. Twin districts will see more deaths of young and old in coming years as well as hot and humid weather conditions....

    There is only One Earth for Humanity to live. There is no "outside" area to throw toxic waste...There is no "aache" when we we say "aache bisaadu"..... It is all OUR environment, either human habitat or animal habitat.

    Please remember three R's when it comes to plastic.
    Refuse - Any plastic bag, toys, cloths (polyester)
    Reduce - When you have to use, take as little as possible and
    Recycle

    I am very disappointed with the industrialization of Coastal areas in the name of job creation. The amount of pollution near MRPL, NTPC, MCF area is alarming.

    Agree ..Its our responsibility .When we know that pollution is bad we still want harming industry in the name of so called development..
    The Entire GDP model of growth is flawed ..it is serving the capitalists interest.The GDP bench marks should be converted to Gross domestic happiness (GDH) .Are people really happy is the question ..
    Anyways ..wondering which cities in KArnataka have the highest levels of pollutions and what are the key contributing factors for such alarming pollution levels.The govt should have a clear road map and policy guidelines to tackle pollution at all costs.

    When it comes to per capita Carbon dioxide emission, with 16.1 tons, USA is at #1 position. India's per capita contribution is 1.9 tons.
