Young man dies in police custody, four police officials suspended

New Delhi, Jan 17 (IANS): A young man arrested on the charge of sexual harassing a minor girl allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday in an east Delhi police station, following which three ASIs and one SI were suspended and an Inspector sent to police lines.

Deepak, 19, was found hanging from the ceiling of a lock-up in Karawal Nagar police station by a constable around 10 a.m.

The man's family, however, said Deepak could not commit suicide and demanded a fair probe.

"Deepak was taken to nearby Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. He was arrested on Monday evening in a 2017 case in which he was absconding. The complainant girl's statement had been registered before a Magistrate," Deputy Commissioner of Police A.K. Singla told IANS.

A resident of Shiv Vihar in Karawal Nagar, Deepak was involved in three to four criminal cases, he said.

Forensic and Crime Branch teams were called to the spot. A Metropolitan Magistrate is also conducting an inquiry, who will soon submit a report.

"Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASIs) Satish, Jasbir, and Rambir, and Sub-Inspector (SI) Sandeep were suspended with immediate effect for negligence and misconduct, while Inspector Narender was sent to police lines," the officer said.

The DCP said Deepak was booked in 2017 on charges of voluntarily causing hurt, sexual harassment, criminal intimidation and using words, gestures, and actions intended to violate the modesty of a woman and the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act at the Karawal Nagar police station on the girl's complaint.
