Udupi, Jul 26: Vishwesha Tirtha Swamiji of Pejawar Math said on Friday that he was not against the Sethusamudram Project but it should be implemented without destroying the Ram Sethu.
The swamiji told presspersons that the latest misinterpretation of the Ramayana, in whichever language it was, had “hurt the religious and spiritual feelings of the common people in the country”.
The Centre’s argument was absurd and skilful deception of the scripture. Lord Ram had nowhere suggested the demolition of Ram Sethu as interpreted by the Centre.
The Ramayana explained that Lord Ram had ordered three divisions in the ritualistic maintenance and conservation of the Ram Sethu and this was testified in the Skanda Purana. “Sethu-Yatra, Sethu-Darshan and Sethu-Puja” were the three cardinal rituals suggested by Lord Ram himself for the future generations. “The Supreme Court has rightly suggested exploring an alternative alignment of Ram Sethu and Sethu Project. The Government too has said that it would consider the Supreme Court’s directive, which is a welcome step,” he said.
The swamiji made it clear that while Lord Ram had himself destroyed some portions of the Ram Sethu, he wanted it preserved by the future generations.
“I am not against the Sethusamudram Project, but I do not want the project to be implemented at the cost of destruction of the Ram Sethu,” he said.
Purandara Mantapa
He said the State Government should take steps to curb certain activities going on in illegal buildings at the Purandara Mantapa in Hampi. This mantapa had good religious value. He would speak to Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa in this regard. If the Government failed to take steps curb the activities there, a protest would be launched.
SEZ opposed
He said he supported the struggle against the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) near Mangalore. “I don’t want the project to come if it is going to endanger the environment. I will be visiting the Benkinatheshwara Temple at Kalavaru in the proposed SEZ area on Sunday. This temple is proposed to be shifted, but it is being opposed by the people,” he said.
