Mangaluru: Media becoming corrupt, creating conflict - Santosh Hegde at SAC conference

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SB)

Mangaluru, Jan 30: Former Karnataka Lokayukta Justice N Santosh Hegde on Tuesday January 30 said that while society was becoming intolerant, media was slowly becoming corrupt, and that corruption was not an individual's fault but of the society.

He was addressing 'Media Manthan- 2018', a day-long conference on 'Media in Neo-Liberal Democracy: Many Challenges' organised by the department of Journalism and Mass Communication was inaugurated at St Aloysius College here.

Justice N Santosh Hegde, who is also a former judge of the Supreme Court inaugurated the conference along with Fr Dionysius Vas, rector, St Aloysius Institutions, Fr Praveen Martis, principal, St Aloysius College and Fr Melwyn S Pinto, HoD, MA (JMC), St Aloysius College.

Addressing the gathering, Santosh Hegde said, "The subject of the conference is important because of two reasons. First, the society has become intolerant. Secondly, the demon of corruption is slowly gripping the media. The society expects truth and facts from media, but somewhere, even the media is involved in creating conflict among the people. We all know the media is the fourth estate of our democracy, but it needs to have equal opportunities to function like the executive, the legislature and the judiciary. There is no absolute freedom of speech. Articles 124 and 21 of the Constitution - sedation and defamation - put some restrictions on absolute freedom. With this in mind, we enjoy our freedom of speech.

"The three pillars of our country are labeled as corrupt these days. It is affecting all of us. Corruption is not an individual’s fault. It is the fault of the society. People who go to jail get bail easily and are welcomed with garlands. Media should expose the motive of people behind this instead of creating hype.

“Everything is under influence of commercialisation. Media faces tough competition in the society, due to which false things are highlighted many a times. With every passing day, human values are decreasing in the society as well as media. Hence all you students of journalism should not betray human values and go under pressure of commercialisation. The voice of poor, exploited and suppressed should always be upheld,” he said.

Fr Praveen said, "The theme for the conference has been aptly chosen by the organizers. Our society needs independent media. People expect social justice and highlighting of real issues. Competition, commercialization and one sided perception are the main challenges for journalists. These issues stop them from supporting the truth or becoming the true voice of the society."

In his presidential address, Fr Dionysus said, "If we learn what neo-liberalism is, it is very easy to know its consequences. The parameter of Indian media changed when foreign capital started to flow into India. Foreign capital established a capitalist and corporate society in India. When media houses owned by corporate world started to function, the entire theory of media changed. Due to this, majority of journalists are just a staff of media houses and do not have freedom to keep forward their own views. Media houses are imposing their perception on the society. It is a very dangerous trend. So journalists should try to overcome all these challenges. They should be more democratic."

Fr Melwyn S Pinto welcomed the dignitaries and gathering.

We can easily make out which party the news channel is supporting...we have to watch multiple channels and come to a conclusion and not rely on only one favorite channel...

We need to rewrite our value system in order to live and experience a life of democracy. But the world, from the beginning cannot see India united & peaceful to think best. As long as India remains in confusion, world can extract cream from it. So lets open our minds and hearts and work towards rebuilding Indians.

You maybe not aware that NDTV and Mirror Now is one of the neutral TV news channel they don't play politic, they bring out the truth.
Let me ask you something why only people are shot in Kashmir? in that shooting many innocents die along with the the terrorist. Why the same force is not used in Mangalore, Uttar Pardesh and where ever there is trouble which is caused by our local terror and fanatic groups?

Lol so what should the indian army do bring tanks and artilleries to fight with useless bajrang dal and pfi. The Indian army has standards to fight with useless politically influenced organization, and yes if people throw stones during anti terror operations what must the army do bhajan or what. Ndtv is not neutral in your dreams it's owned by cpi politicians . That's why haffis sahid the master mind of Mumbai attack told in an interview in Pakistan that ndtv is good. Go and check YouTube. The army has a difficult job to do and we must respect them . Because they guard our nation we are free to livee our life , we enjoy , we go to tours , we go to jobs , we go to church temple and mosque . Every one must respect them, Congress BJP will do nothing for us but the army does a lot, even they have families .

You seems to me like a dala coz you are talking both side just because i spoke out the truth. Yes why not use army where ever police doesn't perform, this local thugs are worse then the terrorist, terrorist they are outsider so it is understood but local thugs being indian they destroy our own country, for instant what is happening in kashgang UP suffron gang is the main culprits who started the trouble. Do you think we need any bloody pakis to start trouble in our country while we have our own.

Raviraj shetty I'm not speaking both side I just told you a fact of media , I don't need to support anyone if you can understand what I had commented first you will know . I didn't support bjp . I just told pro bjp media at least they don't do anti Indian coverage of our army(for political agenda only) . It doesn't not mean that I support them .I agree with you about mirror now but ndtv is anti Indian in behavior , there has been several incidences were ndtv for it's useless TRP had did coverage of sensitive areas during military operation, which is not good. As you said by your self Mr raviraj we have internal enemies as well as they can inform our enemies about our positions . And by the way I don't need to be scarred of you because even if I support bjp or Congress I can say freely , we live in democracy. I don't need to hide it. I support my army and I don't like our media saying non sense about them . Our soldiers are suffering a lot due to our politicians. At least we must be together. I don't have any problem with your view it's your freedom of speech but just like you have it even I have mine right as well .

All media houses in India without exception are becoming BJP stooges. Looks like in every media house in India there is a BJP agent sitting and editing. Any criticism and comments against BJP and its affiliates is very carefully filtered and in some cases not published at all whereas any comments or criticism against any opposition is published without any hindrance. There is no more unbiased media in India now.
