Mangalore: Locals Demand GP Resolutions on SEZ Issue

Mangalore, Aug 1:
The residents of notified areas of Mangalore special economic zone (MSEZ) have recently urged the local administration to clarify their resolutions as per the last meeting on MSEZ issue. Almost all the residents of MSEZ-notified areas oppose the move.

During the gram sabha of Permude gram panchayat (GP), which has Kuttetthoor and Permude villages under its limits, chaired by panchayat president Keshav Devadiga, it was demanded that the local administration make its stand clear. The locals allege that their ancestral properties are being acquired under the guise of SEZ, so as to sell them at an exorbitant price to multi-national companies.

The committee appointed by the union government clearly states that proposed SEZ-notified areas are actually fertile agricultural land. The Karnataka Industrial Area and Development Board has bought land at Padav following which locals lodged a complaint questioning whether the panchayat was aware of this development under its jurisdiction. The panchayat president’s denial of any knowledge in this regard has irked the people.

They have demanded the resignation of panchayat president since instead of joining their struggle against the SEZ, he was displaying ignorance on recent developments in the area. It was decided to postpone the gram sabha since the gram panchayat failed to announce the resolutions of the last meeting. James Coutinho was the nodal officer who conducted the proceedings.
