Bengaluru: Violation-recording smartphone app to help cops catch traffic offenders

Bengaluru, Feb 2: Traffic violators beware! You may have been lucky in missing the eye of the traffic cop, but with the 'Violation-Recording app' you won’t be able to escape the camera’s eye.

Henceforth, one may not see Bengaluru’s traffic cops with a challan book and a pen. Instead, they will be equipped with smart phones which are installed with the violation-recording app. The app can easily capture pictures/videos of several vehicles violating traffic rules at a time. The data of the violators is sent to the traffic management centre (TMC), which generates notices to the owners of the vehicles.

Additional commissioner of police (traffic) R Hitendra told media persons that 250 smartphones will be disbursed to the traffic constables. In the first phase, 88 smartphones have already been disbursed to constables from police stations under the central business district area. The remaining 162 smart phones will soon be distributed to cops from other stations in the city.

The DCP of Bengaluru traffic east tweeted about the app, with a witty warning, "Do not give our men a chance to 'shoot' you !!"

How the App Works

The traffic cop has to simply record the video of the violations. The video is transmitted to the TMC automatically. The cops at the centre will take note of the violator's number plates and issue challans attaching the picture as proof.

Hitendra says that the app makes recording violations an easy process for the traffic cop. Earlier, it was challenging for the cop to manage a signal as well as note down the numbers of violators. Many a time, the violators used to demand proof when they were issued challans. The app solves all these problems and enhances transparency, he added.

In Mumbai There are cameras installed at every traffic signal and fines are levied with at least 2 proof pics of violation. The fines may be paid directly through MTP app. THere are a number of apps available to check if you have violated rules. Just key in your vehicle number and you will have the record of your violations along with pictures of your vehicle and time/date. I think being technology city Bangalore is quite late in implementing this Technology. This system is there in Mumbai since a long time now.
