Madikeri: Man guns down brother, sister-in-law, before killing himself

Daijiworld Media Network - Madikeri (SP)

Madikeri, Feb 4: In a shocking incident reported from M Byadaga village near Murnad in Kodagu district, a person fired at and killed his elder brother and sister-in-law, before committing suicide by turning fire at himself. This incident happened on Saturday February 3 morning.

Devaiah (66) and his wife, Prema Dechamma (53), were gunned down by Devaiah's younger brother and ex-serviceman, Palangiyanda Uthappa (62), a native of M Byadaga village. Uhappa was a resident of Mysuru.

Devaigh and Uthappa were involved in a long-drawn dispute over landed property owned by the family. The issue was pending since the last eight years and a suit had also been filed in the court in this connection. The two brothers had often fought on the issue, and their relatives had temporarily succeeded in intervening and settling their quarrels through mediation.

Uthappa had developed the practice of visiting Murnad during coffee and pepper harvesting season and return to Mysuru after completion of harvesting operation. The brothers had coffee plantations with the same boundary, and were often involved with fight over right of way. Relating to the dispute, Devaiah had approached state high court and succeeded in securing stay order during January this year.

When Devaiah and Prema Dechamma along with worker were harvesting coffee and pepper on Saturday morning, Uthappa reportedly approached them all of a sudden at around 9.15 am and fired at them with his double barrel gun. Devaiah, who suffered injuries in his abdomen region, and Prema, who received bullet injuries in the back, collapsed and died on the spot. Uthappa went away with the firearm and turned the fire at himself at the coffee plantation in front of his house. Although Uthappa, who was bleeding profusely after the incident, was taken to district hospital in the town for treatment where he was treated, his life could not be saved.

Deceased Devaiah and Prema Dechappa have left behind a son and a daughter, while Uthappa is survived by wife and a daughter. A case stands registered in the rural police station here about this incident, and investigation is continuing.

For such a silly reason of Right of way they lost their precious lives. This should have been settled in the court or through mediation. Now it proved that property is precious than lives and they have taken it along with them.

Very bad and tragic.Important is what they have achieved I would like to know.with this dispute and fight lost own lives, and lives of your own brother. This fight always between the family members takes away peace and mind upset.Best is such times sell off and go faraway and lead a simple life.three w s.wife ,wein and wealth in sinne of land.I think people live as daily wagers are more happier than with money.May God forgive them and give eternal rest all of them.we dont judge.Heartfelt sympathy to the familys.

Hindu swami’s and babas are involved in politics and selling fake products in the name of religion, no time to guide their followers. At this old age so much hatred that too towards his own brother! Very strange!

Totally Disgusting. Educated and Matured People with immatured mind behaving irresponsible way killing for money and wealth. What do we carry when we die not money and wealth but definitely a relationship. There was relationship between brothers from one parent but definitely they carried animosity, greed and selfishness but not relationship in their death. I hope the children of these two brothers will live for each other forever after seeing this bloodshed.

I always believe the having disputes regarding the share of the property is idiotic. We, humans, live for around 70 years (if we are lucky). in this short span of time why is there a need to be petty about material things such as property.

Just imagine, are you going to regret when lying on death bed about a piece of land that you did not get? or how happy you would die with acquiring a piece of property?

I always see how most of the religious people get their life wrong despite preaching peace and love to others. I am an atheist and I am glad to be one because I get to see the perspective of life which religious people miss out on. We are part of the universe, the atoms which form our body, and all the things that we know of came from the death of stars. There is nothing yours nor mine.

I hope my comment will help some people to sort of property disputes by adopting a new way of thinking.

Property can be sold or mortgaged and you make money when required... Otherwise Once wallet is empty then you need to depend on friends and well wishers.

    Lessons for everyone....
Don't leave any property or money for your Children or siblings....this will lead to such disasters.... They achieved nothing by the family property except fights & killings...
Give your children good education & ask them to build their own Empire by hard work.
If you have any property or money, distribute them to the poor before you die... Don't leave any asset for fighting.....

Land disputes everywhere it is there. Court takes years together to solve and give judgement. Poor widows and orphans in most cases will not get share or least they get. They donot have money to spend to the court cases.

Life long they quarrel and die and the enemity continues generations. Govt also responsible for this.

Govt should resolve and property cases within short period. Otherewise they sell the property and the case comes stil more complecated

now days Duddu Eddava Doddappa. Some people have no patience so they do like this. I anyway will not get. You also should not get.

A donkey leisurely walks on a straight road, but, when it comes to a cross road, gets puzzled whether to turn right, left or straight. But, we human beings are given wisdom by God and we should use our brain, before our anger destroys us.

With this act of an younger brother, all cases closed, land disputes solved. No more courts required. What the 2 brothers achieved? For sure they lost their life itself. Now at least your souls rest in peace. Like this how many lives gone, how many are waiting to go and how many may have to go in the future. The only one reason for all this is "Greed for money". No end at least in this world.

Courts are totally responsible for all the problems.. They do not know how to solve problems.. Most of the cases end up minting only money... That is very unfortunate in our state... I don't know about other states...
