Bengaluru, Feb 4: On World Cancer Day, February 4, the story of a youth from the city who remained resilient after coming to know that the girl to whom he was engaged to marry had contracted cancer, and faced the situation with affection and courage and succeeded, is very relevant.

The youth, Prajwal, and the girl, Chaya, both from the city, were in love with one another for the last several years. Within days after engagement was held, the girl found that she could not speak. Tests revealed that the girl was suffering from brain tumour that had reached stage 3.

The boy's family members favoured breaking of the alliance, but the boy stood firm in his resolve to fight caner alongside the girl. The girl is on the path to recovery now, back home, and undergoing chemotherapy. The two propose to enter wedded life shortly.

Prajwal from Nagavara in the city it a fitness consultant by profession. Chaya from Rajajinagar here is a distant relative of Prajwal. They kept meeting in functions and fell in love in course of time. Their engagement was held on April 15 last year and the marriage was to be held on November 6, 2017. But within two weeks of engagement, Chaya was diagnosed with brain tumour. Prajwal refused to break his promise of marriage in the face of pressure to do so, and announced that he would fully back Chaya's effort to defeat cancer, and marry her thereafter.

Chaya underwent surgery at Narayana Health to remove her tumour, followed by radiation and chemo therapy sessions. Prajwal provided her solid support at each stage and kept telling her stories of people who have defeated this disease. Chaya has been showing signs of good recovery, and both plan to marry during March this year.

Dr Saurabh Kumar of radio oncology department of the hospital says that self confidence and determination plays an important role in the treatment of such diseases.
