Karkala, Feb 5: A gang of robbers forced its way into house when family members were deep asleep by breaking open the rear door of the house at Banglegudde Junction here on the night of Saturday February 3. The gang brutally attacked the couple living in the house, before escaping with large quantity of cash and gold ornaments.

The house they targetted belongs to Sanjeev Naik. Gold ornaments weighing 21 sovereigns, a costly cellphone and one lac rupees in cash were robbed by the robbers. These items were stored inside a steel almirah. The robbers curiously left behind a chain made of imitation gold found inside the house.

Both Sanjeev Naik and Yashoda, who suffered injuries in this attack-cum-robbery, were admitted into a private hospital here for treatment.

It is said that the robbers initially flashed lethal weapons at the couple to frighten them and then assaulted them. They pressed pillows hard on the faces of the Sanjeev and Yashoda to gag them as a result of which Sanjeev vomitted on the spot. The robbers threatened the couple of killing them if they raised hue and cry. It is learnt that the robbers conducted detailed search for cash and valuables in all corners of the house before leaving by the back door. Instead o reaching the main road thereafter, they took some other route to escape.

Sanjeev happens to be a retired employee of Vijaya Bank, while Yashoda works for Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. Their son and daughter-in-law work abroad.

Local assistant superintendent of police, Rishikesh Sonawane, police circle inspector, Joy Antony, town station sub-inspector, Nanja Naik, and finger print experts visited the house and collected evidences. Sniffer dog summoned for probe went for a hundred metres on the path taken by the robbers before losing scent.

The couple told the police that the robbers were conversing in Tulu and Kannada. As the house in question is located by the side of the main road where movement of people is considerable, and going by the fact that the robbers had planned their entry and exit well, this is suspected to be the handiwork of some known people.

A case stands registered in the town police station and investigation has been undertaken.
