Puttur, Aug 13: Sahasralingeshwara temple of Uppinangady, famously known as Sangama Kshetra, located near the confluence of Netravati and Kumaradhara rivers at Uppinangady, has been witness for a rare sight now. The rising water from the confluence entered the premises of the temple at about 4.00 am on Wednesday August 13.
This rare phenomenon, awaited in reverence by the devotees from across the state, has occured after a gap of 11 years. The temple has been covered on all sides by water, converting it into a virtual isle.
The temple, known in local parlance also as 'Dakshina Kashi' and believed to be equivelant in sanctity to Kashi Vishwanatha temple, has been considered to be a temple of pilgrimage. Devotees believe that offering libation (Pinda Tharpana) in respect of their dead forefathers at this temple relieves the dead from all shackles of earthly bonds and paves way for their libeation from the chain of births and deaths.
It may be recalled, that several noted personalities including cricket sensation Sachin Tendulkar had offered 'Pinda Tarpana' to their dead parents at this spot. People have thronged the place to get a glimpse of this rare sight.
