Cricketer Mohammed Shami charged with attempted murder

Kolkata, Mar 9 (Zee News): India fast bowler Mohammed Shami on Friday has been charged with attempted murder following his wife Hasin Jahan's complaint. In all, there are seven charges against the cricketer.

Things have got murkier since the wife accusing Shami of multiple extramarital affairs. Shami's elder brother has also been charged with rape.

“My husband’s elder brother, Hasib Ahmad, raped me when I went to my in-law’s place in Uttar Pradesh last year,” said Jahan on Friday morning.

Jahan's lawyer, Zakir Hossain, shed further light on the matter. “I have been informed by Kolkata Police officers over phone that they have slapped non-bailable sections against Shami and starting a case against him,” he said.

On Thursday, Kolkata Police Joint CP (Crime) Praveen Tripathi had revealed they had received a formal complaint from Hasin Jahan.

"We have received a complaint from the cricketer's wife where she has alleged physical and mental torture by him. We are yet to decide on which sections a case can be started," he told reporters.

Following Hasin Jahan's allegations, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had also left the 27-year-old bowler out of their contract scheme.

"The BCCI has taken cognisance of all the reports emerging about Mohammed Shami's personal life. It is purely a personal matter and the BCCI has nothing to do with it. However, keeping in mind that the woman in question has met the police commissioner of Kolkata, it is only prudent on BCCI's part to wait for any official inquiry to take place," a board official told the PTI.

Shami, on his part, has denied all allegations against him, saying it was an attempt to derail his cricket career. The fast bowler recently played a vital role in India's Test win against South Africa in Johannesburg.

I have experience meeting 3 lawyers. When we went to meet the first lawyer he gave reference of a second lawyer in a different city because he is a famous lawyer giving speeches & might have been getting commission from the second lawyer and the second lawyer's secretary in was asking ₹5000 as bribe. The third lawyer wanted an advance payment of ₹500 even for speaking & he was adamant on sending notice to the other party before even talking details.

Problem in Indian laws is ther is no punishment for women if she can’t able to prove her allegations, so they free to create any stories to take revenge. Law itself lacks accountability .

It is difficult to favor either side of the individual. The social media works in such a way as to tarnish the image of both parties with public judgements.

The drawback of media trials is that they give rise to public speculations that are unnecessary. Our sentiments usually lie with the powerless in such cases, here, the wife. Unproven media speculations only aggravate the issue and indeed deplete the image of the celebrity in question. Is it really needed?

People with wisdom say to really know your wife, you have to see her in court.

Having extra marital affair in this family drama, I can understand, but murder attempt too? Seriously? So far there wasn't any allegations of any nature but now suddenly infidelity, dowry, murder attempt, physical torture all bundled into one package? And nobody sees through the farce?

This example shows how women systematically exploit gender-biased laws in our country. Just google IPC498a. Any woman can make any vague criminal allegations in India and can get huge amount of money as part of settlement. Once the settlement is agreed the wife automatically withdraws the case. How is it possible that criminal cases can be withdrawn with such impunity?

How can one look at this as anything other than organised crime/extortion racket? There is a huge eco-system surrounding this. It starts with a disgruntled wife who without thinking twice or consulting learned people first contacts an unscrupulous lawyer. Once the case lands at the lawyer's office, you can say goodbye to any hope of reconciliation. That lawyer will tell her how to exploit our broken criminal system. He will ask her to make all sorts of criminal allegations. There is plenty of money to be made. If the boy is proven to be innocent after a few years, the women will not be held to account for exploiting the system. At worst she will get a slap on the wrist and Rs. 500 as fine. This is happening every day in our country and no politician nor the media has the *alls to speak up against this. Everyone is perfectly happy with the breakup of the families, nobody fights for the child's corner.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
