Mandya, Mar 21: All India Congress Committee (AICC) social media head Ramya's mother Ranjitha, who blames that Congress has neglected her in spite of her 28 years of service to the party, is planning to contest the upcoming assembly polls as an independent candidate from Mandya constituency.
“I had requested the senior leaders to give me a small post in the party. However, I was given only assurances which have never been fulfilled. How many years can I wait? Hence, I am thinking to contest independently in the elections,” she told reporters on Tuesday.
She also demanded that Ramya is given an important post in the party. “Though she is doing wonderfully as the AICC social media head, people in Mandya don’t understand that. She should be given a post that will allow her to help people of Mandya,” she told a news channel.
Ranjitha said she will announce her final decision soon.
Meanwhile, Mandya Congress District Women's Unit President Anjana Srikanth alleges that Ranjitha has never been involved in any party activity, except for campaigns favouring her daughter Ramya. She added that she was not aware that Ranjitha wanted a party post. “Will speak to her in this regard,” she added.
Some Congress leaders, who were asked to react on the issue, maintained that Rahul Gandhi will take the call on Ranjitha’s demands.
Earlier, Ramya had denied rumours that she was aspiring to be fielded as a Congress candidate from Mandya in the upcoming elections. Though she was successful in Lok Sabha by-poll from Mandya in 2013, she lost 2014 general elections to JD(S) candidate CS Puttaraju.
