Mangaluru, Mar 24: Students representing various colleges from the district pledged to take up greater individual role in bringing out a change in the society, during the Insignia 2018, Student Leadership Workshop organized by Centre for Integrated Learning in association with Lions Club Mangalore at Lions Seva Mandir, Mallikatte in the city recently.
“Youth towards Socio-Political Consciousness” was the central theme of the day-long deliberations as the event marked the Martyr’s Day commemorating the death sentence of revolutionary freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru.
Inaugurating the programme, mayor of Mangaluru Bhaskar K exhorted the students to learn lessons from the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the cause of the nation. It is necessary for the youth today to understand their responsibilities and work towards betterment of the society with the energy and creativity that they have, he remarked.
In a highly charged up theme presentation, retired professor and Human Resource Development Master Trainer, Prof (Major) Radhakrishna highlighted the issues and concerned faced by the youth in the present day scenario which have been the reasons for deterioration of social order. He listed the reasons for the societal conditions today and challenged the youth to introspect and take the responsibility on themselves rather than to blame the system.
Sensitizing the young students through his own story of struggle in life, Capt. Gopinath P A, retired lecturer, Canara Pre-University College, stressed on the need for volunteerism and a sense of activism among youth in responding to the genuine needs of the society. Academics and social responsibilities should go hand in hand, he mentioned. When there are success stories of many who are physically challenged, a perfectly all right young ones can make a lot of difference in the society, he opined. Adding that students could group up and take up one social cause and work on it with dedication and commitment so as to bring smiles among the under privileged sections of the society.
Executive director of centre for Integrated Learning, Sachitha Nandagopal took the participants through a session of Therapeutic Dance Movement to develop self confident and team building among them.
An interesting panel discussion was organized to create better political and social awareness among students. The panel was participated by environmental activist Dinesh Holla, general secretary of Mangaluru Bharatiya Janta Party, Capt. Brijesh Chowta, Communist Party of India Marxist candidate for the upcoming assembly elections Sunil Kumar Bajal and former Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation Mahabala Marla, moderated by senior journalist Srinivasan Nandagopal.
President of Lions Club Mangalore, Venkatesh Baliga, President of Lioness Club Nancy Mascerenhas among others were present on the occasion.
Centre for Integrated Learning has been conducting student leadership workshops for high school and college students with the objective sensitizing the young and creating awareness on social issues in the local level.
