Mangaluru emerging as new economic hub: Petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, Mar 25: Union petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday March 25 said that Mangaluru is emerging as a new economic hub, and that the merger of ONGC Mangalore Petrochemicals Limited (OMPL) and MRPL is at the final stage and ready for mega expansion.

Addressing a press meet at the Circuit House here, Pradhan said, "Mangalore refinery is a state-of-the-art refinery. In the last four years we have come up with lots of plans to improve the petroleum sector and make Mangaluru a new economic hub. Mangaluru is emerging as the new economic hub.

"At present, MRPL's capacity is 15 million metric tonnes, which will soon be increased to 25 million metric tonnes. The merger of OMPL and MRPL is at the final stage. It is ready for mega expansion starting from land acquisition, technical selection and financial assessment. The total investment capacity of the expansion plan is Rs 70,000 crore," he added.

"Mangalore refinery is an eco-friendly, efficient complex which can even process the crude oil from North America, Iran and Iraq. Now petrol and diesel are titrated, and after the merger the titration will be of petrochemicals and chemicals, which will be great process that will attract a lot of additional state revenue and boost employment.

"For the past four years we are focusing on creating more green energy and by end of April 2020 we will produce BA 6 standard of oil. In Mangaluru it will happen by March 2019," he added.

Regarding Kochi-Mangaluru gas pipeline, he said merger is awaited and by October or November this year, natural gas will be supplied through pipeline in Mangaluru.

"In Karnataka there are over 1.4 crore households with gas connections. In 2014, there were 81 lac gas connections, and a total of 50 lac new connections were added after 2014, covering 89% of the state. Karnatala will soon be the first to have 100% gas connections and also become a smoke-free state, which will be great achievement," he said.

BJP’s national spokesperson Sambit Patra, a popular face on TV channels, has now been appointed as non-official director on the board of state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) Ltd. Appointing Patra to the post for a remuneration of around Rs 23 lakh per year amounted to grant of state largesse to a private person.
1.What’s the qualification of Sambit Patra to be appointed as Director of ONGC,except that he is BJP spokesman. Is ONGC BJP’S private property?”
The decision to nominate BJP workers as non-official directors makes a mockery of the party's 1998 manifesto and the government's own guidelines issued in 2015.

    2. Why is ONGC paying $1.2 billion(Rs 8,000 crore) for Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation(GSPC), a public sector undertaking of the Gujarat state government useless Gas block?
GSPC’s discovery in 2005 still hadn’t resulted in any commercial production by late 2015, even after a whopping investment of Rs.19,576 crore.

State-owned ONGC shelled out Rs 18,787 crore in excess subsidy over 3 years as it ‘over- reported’ crude oil production by 12 per cent, which also resulted in extra payment of performance related pay to its executives, government auditor CAG said . India’s official auditor, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), on censured state-run ONGC for poor planning in hiring and use of drilling rigs that resulted in a loss of Rs.7,995 crore.

CAG reported Rs 20000 crore loss to Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation Ltd (GSPC) during the time of Narendra Modi as the chief minister of Gujarat. Congress has alleged a scam as the party targetted Modi and the companies that were selected arbitrarily. The biggest beneficiary from the so called Gujarat Gas Scam was one Barbados /Mauritius based company “Geo Global Resources”.the ownership patterns of both the Geo Global Resources and the EVM microchip manufacturing company in USA.

Mangalore is just an overgrown town thanks to NRI money and is no economic hub. It provides a minuscule number of jobs in MRPL, NMPT, BASF, KIOCL, MCF to locals as most of them have been taken over by outsiders. The SME's run by locals are struggling due to ill-planned GST and Demonetization.

The bitter truth is that without gulf money from our NRI fellow citizens since last 4 decades, Mangalore would have been like any under developed city in UP or Bihar. Neither MRPL nor Mangalore sea port contributed to uplift the lives of locals the way gulf money contributed. Because of gulf money the literacy rate in Mangalore is highest in Karnataka.

Further, the Arabian Sea restricts the growth of Mangalore towards West and Karnataka-Kerala border on the east, so Mangalore can grow only on 2 directions, so little scope for further industrial expansion.

Also Mangalore doesn't enjoy cheap connectivity (by road and train) with capital city Bangalore . With maximum of only 2 trains a day, a highway that gets closed during monsoon almost every year and distance of 360km, our so called economic hub Mangalore doesn't enjoy the sort of connectivity that a city requires in order to develop quickly. having said this, Mangalore can be next Mumbai or Dubai if gulf money continue to flood in to Mangalore from gulf. Govt can't do it

Inaugration of UPA projects from Feku.
CBI & IT raids on oppositins backyard from SHAH.

Mr. Minister. all that talks are fine! Try to provide more support from Delhi! How much employment goes to locals in MRPL? This unit is suffering from acute shortage of water in the summer! Why not start a desalination plant along with MRPL to share utilities and process?? Take the MP to task for not doing work like local MLA's! Field an educated and efficient candidate to represent as MP!!! Yes, Mangalore is growing as major economic hub only due to state rule and its law makers.....please explain major central role....do not tell MRPL is established by you.....please remember to add it into your so called zero devpt of UPA!!!
