Udupi, Mar 27: A youth attempted suicide after he was allegedly tortured by the Manipal police who had called him to the police station for enquiry over a matter.
Rakesh Kumar (23), a DJ residing in Udyavar, has been admitted in a hospital in Manipal after he tried to slit his wrists.
On Sunday March 25, Rakesh and his friend Rahul Poojary were riding towards Manipal. When they reached Ishwarnagar, a car driven by a person identified as Chandrakant came in the way all of a sudden. An irked Rakesh alighted from his bike and confronted Chandrakant. A heated exchange of words ensued.
Rakesh in his statement claimed that Chandrakant got personal and hurled abuses directed against his father. An enraged Rakesh allegedly hit Chandrakant and even picked up a heavy stone, threatening to hurl it at Chandrakant. The others who were at the spot intervened and pacified the two. No injuries were reported.

Chandrakant, who is a lecturer at a college, later filed a complaint in Manipal police station, after which Rakesh was summoned for enquiry. Rakesh has alleged that in the police station, he was tortured and abused by the policemen on duty. "The police tortured me and used abusive language against my mother," Rakesh alleged.
Hurt by the alleged insults, Rakesh went to Wind Point near Mannu Palla lake in Manipal and attempted suicide by slitting his wrist with glass splinters.
A badly injured Rakesh was rushed to hospital where he has been admitted in the ICU.
Sources said that Rakesh's family has complained to the SP who has assured to take action in the matter.
Attempts to reach Manipal police for a statement went unanswered.
