Bengaluru: Postcard website founder Mahesh Vikram Hegde arrested over fake news

Bengaluru, Mar 29: Mahesh Vikram Hegde, founder of right-leaning Postcard News, has been arrested by the Karnataka police under Sections 153A, 295A and 120B of the Indian Penal Code.

Section 153 of IPC deals with attempt to promote enmity between religious groups, Section 295A addresses deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage sentiments, and Section 120B of IPC refers to criminal conspiracy.

It is learnt that he was arrested for the recent fake news on Postcard website alleging that Muslim youth had attacked a Jain sage, whereas the reality was that the sage had met with an accident. A case had been registered against Hegde over this fake news, and he was arrested on Thursday March 29. Sources said that he was just returning from a meeting with BJP president Yeddyurappa in Bengaluru, when the police arrested him.


Postcard News, that is known for often publishing and circulating fake news especially those that are communally divisive in nature, is run by Mahesh Hegde. In November 2017, an FIR had been registered against Postcard News for publishing an alleged derogatory post. Incidentally, Mahesh Hegde is followed by PM Narendra Modi on Twitter, a fact that Hegde proudly proclaims in his Twitter profile.

BJP MP Pratap Simha, who is considered close to Mahesh Hegde, tweeted about the arrest, attacking the ruling Congress government. However, he got the facts wrong, as contrary to his claim, Hegde was not arrested under Section 66 of the IT Act but under the IPC sections.

    One thing which runs in most of Indian media is to....Demonise Muslims and their faith and spread fake narrative of Hindu khatre main hain...Coz one party particularly benefits from this narrative...coz their religion has turned into a anti Muslim cult...According to them a person can be good hindu only if he hates Muslims ...

    Mahesh Vikram Hegde should have been put behind bars long ago for spreading enimity between two communities by posting fake news.It is very sad thing that BJP President Yadyurappa, MP Pratap Simha and many BJP leaders are the supporters of Vikram Hegde. It is not a good journalism but journalism it is a sort of terrorism. Home Minister should ask the concerned police officers to take the stringent action against Vikram Hegde and his partner Deepak Shetty and others and shut his website which makes more harm to the society. There are many more websites and groups which spread lies and fake news in social media specially on facebook.Thanks to CCB Police officers for arresting Vikram Hegde, editor of Postcard website.

    Last week a stringent Law was passed in Malaysia - that any person or Media house who spreads fake news is liable for punishment of minimum 10 years rigorous imprisonment .
    Such a Law should be brought even in India. Then BJP IT cell will be closed with immediate effect as they are called as " factory of Lies & fake news". Even PMO supports the fake news of BJP IT cell.

    Congrats and Kudos to Karnataka Police. Time some one did it. Such criminal minded editors should be sent behind bars for life. Since 2014 we have fake chaiwala as PM with Fake education qualification, the criminal editors who are spreading fake news could get away easily.     Hegde has been found spreading fake news to incite communal violence on multiple occasions. In December, the website had falsely reported that one 18-year old Paresh Kamalakar Mesta was tortured, his body mutilated and heads splits into two because he was a member of Sangh Parivar. However, the victim’s father had made it clear that his son had no association with the RSS giving credence to suspicion that the BJP may have attempted to communalise his murder to extract electoral gains in the poll-bound state.
    Another fake news by the same website had become a bone of contention between Karnataka and Rajasthan in August last year, when it falsely likened the Karnataka government to that of Taliban rule. It had further added that Hindus needed to deposit Rs 10 Lakhs to celebrate Chaturthi.
    Hegde, who is also followed by PM Modi on Twitter, had posted a fake news about a Jain monk being attacked by Muslim youth in Bangalore. The truth was that the said monk had got hurt in a road accident in Kanakapura.
    In a speech to the Rajya Sabha, Derek O’Brien of the Trinamool Congress accused Modi of encouraging online hatred and harassment through his choice of whom to follow. “26 Twitter handles that give out rape threats, communal threats, are followed by the PM of India.
    On Twitter, Modi’s party could tack strategically between aggressive Hindutva and a more inclusive platform. His devoted online network got their cues directly from him and other leaders.     In the real world, aggressive and intimidating cadre can turn from an asset into a liability once you’ve won power, especially once you’re leading a national government. With online trolls, however, a new shadow politics arises. The government can continue to control and deploy networks while denying any responsibility for vicious trolls.

    I think its high time to block all these fake news sites... many sites publishing fake news with no contact details no authenticity... In puttur also recently started site nikharanews.com also making fake news and created hat-redness between people many a time already.. Hope police will curb all these anonymous sites so that the legitimate sites and news media will survive. We need media to create peace in our region and not to spread venom...

    Its not Congress or BJP who can bring peace or harmony. Everyone s responsible for the situation today. We read fake news and spread it on social media without using our brains. The education and technology misused to misguide people. Minds have been corrupt and we use whatsapp facebook to talk to neighbor, without seeing face and expression and the message might be conveyed in different way than what it needs to be.
