Bengaluru: Pejavar Swamiji seeks tickets for Brahmins in assembly election

Bengaluru, Apr 2: Sri Vishveshateertha Swamiji of Pejawar Math, speaking to media persons here on Sunday April 1, advocated for allotment of some assembly election tickets to Brahmin candidates. He felt that Brahmins deserve to be given  suitable representation in the assembly election.

He was speaking after participating in the 'Vipra Shakti - Maha Shakti' programme organized at Malleshwara Brahmin Sabha with the aim of urging political parties to issue  some of the tickets for the assembly election to candidates belonging to Brahmin community.

"It is left to political parties to decide who should be fielded from  where. It would be unfair for others to interfere in this issue.  I am a well-wisher of all the people. Therefore, I do not demand for caste-wise representation. However, my only request is that Brahmins should not face injustice in political representation. Others also should not face injustice," he added.

The Swamiji said that voters are intelligent. He  exhorted the voters not to fall prey to lures extended by politicians and think independently before deciding on votes.  He felt that Brahmins should together decide about whom to vote. "I do not suggest any particular individual or party.  It is up to you to decide a suitable candidate and vote for him or her," he clarified.

He expressed concern about the theories being floated by some intellectual, claiming that Brahmins are responsible for all kinds of enmity or misgivings  between Brahmins and people from other castes. "In fact,Brahmin community contributed immensely for the overall welfare of the society. They also worked for eradication of untouchability. They do not break the society. Even commoners do not have any hatred towards them. But there are some people who keep doing things which give rise to enmity and unrest unnecessarily," he felt.

On the issue of Lingayat and Veerashiva, Pejawar Swamiji said that Lingayat worship their Ishta Lingas while Veerashaivas worship idols. He added that they are one and the same, and all people who worship Lord Shiva in any form are Hindus. They should never be separated from Hindu religion. He pointed out that within Brahmins too there are several different groups but all of them are considered as Hindus.

It was Bakthi Bhandari Basavanna who recognized Dalits as fellow human beings early on in our journey of a caste oriented society. Christian missionaries and Christian organizations recognized Dalits as fellow human beings in our midst before the Seers ever did it. I am glad the Pejawar Seer has broken the mold in feeling the plight of Koragas, a step in the right direction. I would like to see the Seer welcoming Koragas and such to the pankthi in the mutt. What is preventing him to do what Basavanna did centuries ago?
