Mangaluru: Viral video shows parking attendant at airport overcharging car user

Mangaluru, Apr 2: A video purportedly showing collection of excess parking fares by the parking attendant at Mangluru International Airport is doing the rounds in social media since Sunday April 1.

The video shows a car driver receiving a parking slip of Rs 60 for two-hour parking as against Rs 55 specified for small cars in the parking fee structure. Despite his vehicle being in the small cars category, the driver was issued a receipt for SUV/tempo/mini bus, triggering an argument between him and the parking attendant. The parking attendant is seen behaving arrogantly, flashing his id card and daring the car user to complain against him.

Fee Structure

Coach/bus/trucks - Rs 70
Tempo/SUV/mini bus - Rs 60
Car - Rs 55
Two-wheeler - Rs 15

The rates given above are applicable for two hours. After two hours, the rate increases by Rs 10 per hour. For two-wheelers, the charge after the two-hour period is Rs 5 per hour. The parking fee beyond 7 hours up to 24 hours is 300% of the first two hour rate and every 24 hours or part thereof. Free parking of maximum five minutes is allowed in front of the terminal building.

The above fee structure was circulated in the year 2014, and since then the fee has not changed.

The argument erupts when the parking fee structure is not strictly followed, either out of ignorance of the make of the vehicle, or deliberately. For examply, if a person takes an Audi car to Mangaluru airport and gets a parking slip of Rs 60 despite it being an LMV as mentioned in the registration certificate of the vehicle, the driver would obviously question the reasoning behind categorising it under tempo/SUV/mini bus instead of charging Rs 55 as specified for cars.

Cars like XUV, Fortuner, Audi, Innova and so on come under LMV category as mentioned in the registration certificates of the respective vehicles. Based on this, the Airport Authority of India has formed a policy regarding parking charges for Mangaluru airport.

It is the duty of the parking attendant to apprise the car user of the charges and clear doubts in case of any confusion. Moreover, there are complaints that parking attendants are often arrogant towards car users, which further worsens things.

It is also alleged that if there is a queue of around eight cars or more at the exit point the parking attendants purposely delay in clearing them, so that other cars behind cross the free parking period and are forced to cough of Rs 55 or Rs 60 depending on their vehicle make.

Video Two Month Old

As per the airport officials, the viral video is two months old. Several complaints were received about the parking attendant shot in the video, and acting on the complaints, the airport authorities took action against parking attendant concerned, and terminated him. "We can notice in the video that the parking attendant wore black uniform, but that uniform was changed two months ago," an official said.

05 minutes to drop off passengers is too short. There are at least 4 barriers to go to drop off point. and then you will have to return same way again negotiating the barriers. What is the necessity to have barriers . It is there only to delay your dropping of passengers and come out of the gate which will exceed 05 minutes.
First of all the barriers have to be removed and the vehicles will have to exit from other side(which is presently occupied by vip vehicles ) through the ramp so that there will be free flow and quick exit off vehicles. The time between entry to airport and exit should be increased 20 minutes. The contractor should employ kannada speaking staff.

I am not at all supporting this incident ( charging more money) but my observation is people made this video viral with a caption of FRAUD/SCAM in Mangalore Airport. I though another scam of 10,000 crores. When I watched the video I found the guy was charging 5 rupees extra (instead of 55 he used to charge 60). Do we have guts to challenge the government servants, politicians who make big money. Do we question when politician constructs a lavish villa, spends money (500 crores for a wedding) etc.. In fact we choose them again for the next term because the politician belong to our community, religion etc.

One more technique followed by these contractor is, printing the entry ticket with 2-3 minutes advanced time. Parking is supposed to be charged if the vehicle stays within the premises or more than 5 mins. Yet the contractor will insist that the vehicle was inside for over 5 mins by manipulating the timing. For example if you enter at 7:00 am, they will issue a ticket showing 7:03 am. No one notices this. But if the vehicle is used only for dropping the passenger, even if the time taken is less than 5 mins, at exit point the person asks for parking charges saying that more than 5 mins is taken by the vehicle.

Written complaint was raised to Airport Authority of India on this and they have replied stating that the contractor has been advised not to do such malpractices. But who goes to airport everyday to check such matters?

All users should invariably check on this when they enter.

Parking fee free for 5 minutes is less for just drop and go vehicle .. ticket issued from entrance gate to other drive takes 4 minutes then how can you drop passengers with bags go out within 5 minutes?? the time has to change to 10 minutes.. ... and at entrance counter they print ticket before vehicle enter gate that has to be stopped..

There is organized cheating going on with Parking there. I was driving there for the first time two weeks back and at the entry checkpost no body stopped me to issue a token. I dropped my relative and was out within 5 mins. At the departure they started asking me the token, i said i am not aware of any .At this point they start creating huge ruckus . They were speaking in hindi and were not ready to listen. Thankfully some local travellers came to my help . Shouldnt the authorities ensure that there is proper process and they charge for Parking only at the Parking area and not just for entry and exit. Totally disappointed that something like this is happening our place

Airport parking regulatory sucks. The main intention of this office is not to impose and maintain decent parking. The main intention of this office is to make money. Even if you law abiding citizen there is no flexibility for them. If i go to drop or pickup at airport, even if it is 15 min they charge 60/55 rs. I would agree authorities doing good job only if they make 30 min free parking.
