Bengaluru: Lingayats demand Congress tickets in 40 constituencies

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Apr 13: The issue of giving minority religion status to Lingayat, which is expected to play an important role in deciding the fortunes of political parties, has begun to gain prominence in the issue of allotment of Congress tickets too. It is gathered that people falling under Lingayat community have demanded tickets in 40 constituencies for their candidates, while Veerashaiva sect has been pitching for 20 tickets. These demands have put chief minister, Siddaramaiah, in a bind and the Congress high command, which was expecting to encash this issue to its advantage, too is facing predicament on this matter, it is learnt.

The chief minister, who was expecting to win over the loyalty of Lingayat community by recommending to give religious minority status to them by ignoring Veerashaivas, finds himself mired in new problems on account of the above demand.

Lingayats have been pointing out that they have the potential to influence the results in 110 assembly constituencies in the state. Therefore, they say their demand for 40 seats is just. As per information, Lingayat Mahasabha and Veerashaiva leaders have been exerting pressure to consider fielding of their candidates in various constituencies in north Karnataka, central Karnataka, and Old Mysore area. Lingayats have also demanded tickets in four constituencies in the city, and Virajpete constituency in Kodagu district, it is said. Veerashaiva community also believes that it has clout in at least 20 constituencies and hence wants to field its own members in these constituencies.

In 2013 election, Congress had fielded 44 Lingayat candidates, out of which 29 had come out victorious. The current perception that Lingayat community will be supporting Congress this time with added vigour as the Congress government has recommended their case for minority religion tag, has provided thrust to the community's demand. The members of this community have been arguing that issuing tickets to Lingayats will brighten chances of Congress candidates.

General Secretary of Lingayat Mahasabha, J B Patil, said that the community members have urged the chief minister to allot more seats to members from their community. He said that it has been decided to give priority to even backward classes within the community when choosing candidates.

Congress has opened the pandora's box of Lingayath, created one more problem. This means Xtins will have to be removed from the Minority List to include Lingayats. This is the only way Lingayats could get a Minority Tag. And Minority ruling Majority will become the practise and one community sharing national resources will create problem for India in future and the concept of RESERVATIO itself will be questioned.

We are all minorities in India, especially the Brahmans who are outnumbered ten to one by the SC/ST/OBCs, and now the remaining "non-aligned" Hindus are claiming minority religious status. Where will all this end? I think it is time for politicians to consider a proportional government, based upon minority parties! This will certainly ruin the Constitution.

It is no doubt that 'Lingayats' is the dominant minority in Karnataka if they are separately recognised.

As far as question of giving tickets it should be based on merits of 'development' not on caste and creed.
But in India without 'casteism' nothing moves forward. If every religion start demanding then India will never developed.
Why not the same rule on reservation is no applicable to political parties?

Sir, RSS political wing BJP is the now the torch bearer of the 'Divide and Rule' policy of British era.
This is very reason father of constitution Dr. Ambedkar quit Hinduism and embraced 'Buddhism'.

It is the dirty congress headed by dynasty rule Mahapita Nehru, who is instrumental in ousting Dr.Bhimarao Ramaji Ambedkar from Congress and Hindu Religion. When Ambedekar was Minister and contested for Lok Sabha neither Janasangh or BJP was not there and RSS was very much supportive of Ambedkar's views. These congis lead by Nehru troubled Dr.BRA and not the other parties. It has become a fashion for pseudo secularists to blame BJP/RSS for any thing happened in the country and they can not digest the good work done by BJP/RSS.

It is well known that the present state government used this community to divide votes in the name of religion with a few community politicians and some disgruntled heads of mutt who are always opposing BSY and BJP . But the common Lingayats are very much shrewd and understood the idea behind the this division. They will definitely vote for BSY and BJP to defeat the sinister moves of corrupt congress.

According to the news report Congress had fielded 44 lingayat candidates in 2013 elections. Now they are demanding tickets for 40 candidates. So what is the problem ?. Giving tickets to 40 Lingayats should be easy for Siddu. And if they are chosen from the Lingayat majority constituencies then they can easily win.

Have they been granted minority status. It was only a political stunt by the Siddu. Age old Congi divide and rule policy and they blame others as communal. Lingayats will soon be marooned if the center declines. Which for sure will. In 2013 the same Congi had refused it. Then siddu will blame the center and BJP even if he is the CM or not. Lingyats will only then realize that they have been taken for a biiiiiiiiiiiiiig ride .Wonder how these swamy's have fallen for this gimmick.

Giving reservation does not make a party communal. Spreading hatred between communities by making hate statements, publishing fake news among communities etc. is what makes a party communal.

I don't see a logic of minority status here
Lingayat's have the potential to influence the results in 110 constituencies whereas Veerashaivas has clout in only 20 seats. But Lingayats are Minorities.
Majority and Minority meaning in India can anyone explain please......
    Total confusion.

As of now Veerashaivas are included/treated as part of the greater Hindu community but since Lingayats have been recognized as a separate religious community (awaiting Centre's approval) they are treated as a minority in comparison to the Hindu community. Since the total Hindu community in Karnataka is much larger than the Lingayat community therefore Veerashaivas are also treated as part of the majority ?
