Bantwal, Apr 17: The JMFC court here, on Monday April 16, granted bail to Steven D'Silva from Ira who was arrested by excise department officials after allegedly finding stock of liquor in excess of permitted quantity at a house where an engagement ceremony was on.
In a curious turn of events, the family of Steven has decided to take on excise department legally.
On Saturday, the excise officials, in an operation launched at a house where engagement ceremony was on, had taken possession of liquor stock from the residence and filed case against Steven's brother, Daniel. But they registered case against Steven, produced him in front of the judge and sent him to judicial custody. Apparently, the police had not found liquor in the residence of Steven. Therefore people feel that the excise department botched up the case by arresting Steven and sending him to jail, thus harming his reputation and insulting him.
Advocate for Steven is now ready to fight against the excise department. Advocate for Steven, Suresh Pojary, said that excise department registered a case about finding of liquor bottle in a house and then sent someone else into judicial custody. The officials also failed to produce the actual culprit in front of the judge. Therefore, he says, the option of fighting the department legally is being considered.
The engagement ceremony of Daniel's daughter was under way on Saturday afternoon when excise department from the town conducted surprise raid. They arrested Steven the same day and arranged for his judicial custody after producing him before the judge. The accused could not secure bail as Saturday and Sunday were holidays for the court. The bail application was moved on Monday, which was promptly upheld.
