Mangalore, Sep 2: The city is all set to welcome Lord Ganesh as Ganesh Chaturthi is on the threshold. The feast of first fruits of the earth will be celebrated on Wednesday September 3. While the entire city is decked to welcome Lord Ganesh, Car Street and Central Market were the two places which remained busy and extremely crowded on Tuesday September 2 for various reasons.
Devotees were rushing to these two localities to purchase the most essential puja items including the idol of Lord Ganesh and vegetables.
Ravi Bhandary, the producer of idols of Lord Ganesh had remained busy for the whole day in packing the idols to hand over them to the confirmed customers. The devotees from distant places have already purchased the idols of Lord Ganesh on Tuesday itself. The idols prepared by him are sold to Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala and Bhatkal in Uttara Kannada. He had prepared nearly one thousand idols of Lord Ganesh, with price ranging from Rs 60 to 1000. Devotees from nearby places will take the idols on Wednesday, sources informed.
Meanwhile, vendors across the city were busy selling chrysanthemum, jasmine, screw-pine, areca inflorescence flowers etc. Huge quantity of chrysanthemum flowers have been brought to the city, from Shimoga district, to meet the demand during Ganesh Chaturti, sources added.
The central vegetable market also remained busy for the whole day because of the heavy demand for the vegetables owing to the Ganeshotsav. There was a heavy demand for the okra, ridged-gourd and bitter-gourd, cococasia in the marker, said one the vegetables vendors in the market. The customers have steady money in their hands since it is beginning of the month, to spend lavishly on Ganeshotsav, he added.
The rates for all the vegetables were almost double than the usual days and the demand for the vegetables was also almost double, sources added. Sugar canes, ‘Moode’ leaves, made out of ‘Voli,’ dried longish leaves, ginger plants and turmeric leaves were sold largely in the city on the occasion of Chaturti. The people were rushing to the markets in large numbers on Tuesday. But the road blocks owing to the concreting around the market proved big hurdle for the customers who were in the mood of festival.
