Archbishop of Nagpur Abraham Viruthakulangara passes away

Nagpur, Apr 19: Archbishop of Nagpur, Abraham Viruthakulangara, passed away in the very early hours Thursday, April 19 at the CBCI Centre, New Delhi. The funeral details will be communicated later on by the archdiocese.

Archbishop Abraham Viruthakulangara was born on June 5, 1943 in Kerala. He was ordained a priest on October 28, 1969 and began serving as parish priest and district superior of Sendhwa parish of Khargon, Madhya Pradesh. At the very early age of 34, he was consecrated Bishop on July 13, 1977 and was given the charge of the then newly created diocese of Khandwa.

After two decades, on April 22, 1998, he took charge as metropolitan archbishop of Nagpur. He was serving as the archbishop of Nagpur when he passed away peacefully in his sleep this morning, said Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas, secretary feneral, Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India. He urged all to pray that his soul may rest in peace.
