50 IIT alumni quit jobs to form political party, await EC approval

New Delhi, Apr 22 (PTI): A group of 50 alumni from the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) across the country have quit their jobs to form a political party to fight for the rights of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes.

The group, which is waiting for an approval from the Election Commission, has named their outfit "Bahujan Azad Party".

"We are a bunch of 50 people, all from different IITs, who have quit our full-time jobs to work for the party. We have applied to the Election Commission for an approval and are meanwhile doing ground work," Naven Kumar, a 2015 IIT Delhi graduate, who is leading the group, said.

The party members, however, do not wish to jump the gun and aim for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

"We do not wish to do a hurried job and end up being reduced to just one of those small political outfits with big ambitions. We will begin with contesting the 2020 Bihar assembly elections and then aim for the next Lok sabha polls," Kumar said.

The group, which includes members mostly from the SC, ST and OBC communities, feels that the backward classes have not received their due in terms of education and employment.

All set with a poster which has pictures of B R Ambedkar, Subhas Chandra Bose and A P J Abdul Kalam, among others, the party has already begun a social media campaign.

"Once we have the registration, we will form small units of the party which will start working on the ground for our target groups. We also do not wish to pitch ourselves as a rival of any political party or ideology," Kumar added.

Good move. Unless you succeed in removing caste-ism from our system, it will be difficult for a qualified and upright person to win the elections. Look at Siddaramaiah's case. He has to contest from a North Karnataka constituency because of the caste factor in his chamundeshwari constituency. Though the incumbent MLA has done nothing for the constituency, he is confident of winning because of the caste factor which he belongs to is in a majority. We wish these 50 young blooded enthusiastic boys with a vision and mission for India all the best.

Fight for the SC/ST!!!. Students from General merits must get 100% now a days to get seat nd SC/ST even 50% enough. For what else they want to fight for. We , the General merit groups must not cast our vote nd must demand to stop reservation nd preference should be given equally to all capables. Or make everyone backward. In sc/st/obc who ever is financially weak govt should provide them free education but the marks level must be same.

1 KREC guy was enough to destroy the lush green landscapes in the outskirts of Mangalore.
All we can do is wait and see if these 50 IIT folks do good or bad.

Also ensure that an MP/MLA to have only 2 terms max to remain in office and later no opportunity, so that all others too fall in line.

Moreover a sitting MP should not be allowed to contest for MLA seat! MPs & MLAs should not be allowed to contest more than one Constituency at a time.

Those who knows the pain and strain to secure a merit seat in IITs and IIMs and burned midnight oil to outperform may not venture in to this. If any of the 50 has availed subsidy or support from Government for education, they shall be made to refund it as nation is not going to get benefit from them as envisaged. They are answerable to every taxpayer of the Nation....!

Agree with you 100 %. BJP and RSS hand behind this. We have come across many IIT engineering graduates who have been a total failure in their professional career solely due to poor and/or non performance. So let us not over romanticize IIT and IIM graduates. Praise must be given for good and consistent professional performance and not just because of one's IIT/IIM label. See the kind of statements IITian Parrikkar makes about women and alcohol drinking - it goes to show how backward his thinking is ? Good IITians themselves will tell you this.
