Regionalism : After Jaya, It's King Khan's Turn...

Agencies

MUMBAI, Sep 9: After MNS Chief Raj Thackeray's attack on Jaya Bachchan over her alleged anti-Marathi remarks, Shiv Sena has now targeted Bollywood badshah Shah Rukh Khan on his Delhi origin.

"Shah Rukh says he is a Dilliwala. If you are from Delhi, then why have you come to Maharashtra," Sena Chief Bal Thackeray said in an editorial in party mouthpiece Saamna on Tuesday.

"You come to Maharashtra to earn fame and wealth but once you have had your fill, then you will evoke the name of the region from where you came from. And Marathi people are expected not to utter a word in their own state," the Sena mouthpiece said.

"If you have a sense of regionalism, then what is wrong if we also indulged in it a bit," Saamna said.

"In southern states, the anti-Hindi campaign has been on for the last sixty years. There is a ban on Hindi films and Hindi news in Tamil Nadu. In Assam, those speaking in Hindi are killed," it said.

"Why don't the people who boast here that they are from UP or Bihar go to these areas and unfurl the Hindi banner," the editorial said.

"Amitabh Bachchan does not belong to a region or language. When it comes to his art, walls of regionalism and language crumble down. He is such a great actor," Saamna said. However, when his wife proclaims that "we are from Uttar Pradesh", how one fathoms that, it asked.

Jaya apologises for remark

Bowing down to pressure, Jaya Bachchan on Tuesday apologised for her remark about speaking in Hindi, which had invited the wrath of both the Shiv Sena and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.

"I am very sorry if I have hurt the sentiments of Marathi speaking people in Mumbai and Maharashtra," Jaya said in an interview to Mumbai Mirror.

"My remark about choosing to speak in Hindi at the music launch of a Hindi film was said innocently. Why would I go out of my way to malign the city that has given us everything? Don't we belong to this city too? I will not show disrespect to this city till the day of my death," she added.

During the music launch of Drona, Jaya had said that she would speak in Hindi as she is from Uttar Pradesh.  The Shiv Sena and Raj Thackeray-led MNS slammed the comment and said it was an 'insult' to Maharashtrian people.

Raj Thackeray had even threatened to disrupt the screening of all Bachchans' films in the state.

Supporters of Raj Thackeray took to the streets on Monday to blacken or tear the posters of Amitabh Bachchan's latest film 'The Last Lear', scheduled to be released on September 12.

"I never thought my innocent remarks would create such a negative impact. I am comfortable in Hindi. That's the language I think in. And that's the language I prefer to speak in. But for the information of those who think I meant offence against the Marathi language, let me also say I speak Marathi and I speak it quite well. If I have inadvertently hurt anyone's sentiments, I regret the hurt caused," Bachchan told the Mumbai-based tabloid.

Please do something for the upliftment of Maharashtrian rather than Marathi, Marathi as a language is great in itself and not because of these so called politicians. why dont you come out and do something good for your people instead of harming popular people and trying to gain mileage for your party, there are so many people from the underworld scattered all around Maharashtra who have done henious acts like bombing

Why dont these so called Maharashtra loyalist bring them to task.they are well aware of this but they will not have guts to mess around with them instead they harm people who are peace loving and done good things for our country

This is nothing but a politics on part of Thackerey's. We are in no need to comment on such articles. Because an educated human being is aware of the matter that the, politicians or the leaders who use to create such problems had granted their childrens or grand ones about all the languages which they are aware is needful.

Their close ones should be perfect in every field, but the innocents should be moving to the directions which they want them to. Finally they act as if they are true maratian's/others. Its all rubbish. My dear friends the time is still left, so please stop responding on such issues, & hating each others because of difference in religions/languages.

IT IS VERY SAD TO READ THE DISTRUCTIVE COMMENTS MADE BY THE THACKERAY FAMILY.WHILE WE CALL INDIA AS A DEMOCRATIC AND SECULAR COUNTRY BIAS TOWARDS REGIONAL LANGUAGES DOESNOT COME IN THE PICTURE. IT IS VERY SAD THAT THE THACKERAY FAMILY IS POTRAYING VIOLENCE IN THE NAME OF A LANGUAGENAMELY MARATHI. WHILE THE FOUNDING FATHERS OF OUR CONSTITUTION ADVOCATED FREEDOM TO SPEECH OR SPEAK HOW ON EARTH CAN ONE QUESTION ANOTHER TO SPEAK ONLY THE LANGUAGE OF THAT STATE? IS IT NOT FOOLISH ON THE PART OF THESE LEADERS TO CREATE VIOLENCE AND TERROR JUST IN THE NAME OF A LANGUAGE? EVERY YEAR ON THE OCCASSION OF INDEPENDENCE DAY AND REPUBIC DAY PUBLIC SPEECHES ARE MADE BY VARIOUS POLITICAL PARTIES ASKING THE PEOPLE TO STAY UNITED , CALM ETS .

IF HEADS OF POLITICAL PARTIES THEMSELVES ARE DIVIDING A PARTICULAR STATE JUST IN THE NAME OF A LANGUAGE CAN INDIA SEE THE LIGHT OF PROGRESS ? VERY SAD INDEED EDUCATED PEOPLE ARE FINDING WAYS AND MEANS TO BRECH COMMUNAISM IN THE NAME OF MONEY AND POWER.TO YOU SHIV SENA I APPEAL IF THE PEOPLE HAVE ELECTED YOU AS THEIR LEADER IS BECAUSE THEY TRUSTED YOU . BUT YOU IN RETURN HAVE USED THE MEDIUM OF LANGUAGE AS A TOOL AND ARE SPOILING THE NAME AND FAME WHICH THE OLD BOMBAY HAD. THE VERY NAME MUMBAI ALSO HAS LOST ITS CHRM BECAUSE OF THE DIRTY POLITICS PLAYED BY SIV SENA. ASKING HINDI MOVIES TO BE STOPPEDFROM SCREENED IN MUMBAI IS ABSOLUTELY ABSURD. BOMBAY OR PRESENT MUMBAI IS A HOME WHERE HINDI FILM INDUSTRY HAD ITS BITH OR RATHER ORIGINATED.ITS IS APLACE WHICH WAS CONSIDERED AS SECOND HEAVEN TO MANY YOUNGSTERS WHO SOUGHT WORK HERE AND GROOMED THEMSELVES HERE. MUMBAI WAS A PLACE LIKE THE THE PRESENT GULF IN THE EARLY 30'S AND 4O'S.

IT IS VERY PATHETIC TO KNOW DUE TO VESTED INTERESTS PEOPLE ARE CREATING HARM TO THIS BEAUTIFUL STATE AND CITY OF INDIA.ISN'T IT THROUGH THE FILM INDUSTRY THAT YOU SHIV SENA IS GETTING TAX TO FILL YOUR POCKETS?

I really stand beside Mr. Jude Comments. We all should criticise regionalism, to achieve this we should elect & only National parties either BJP or Congress everywhere. But Shiv Sena said something which makes sense. Let these Hindi movie stars go to Tamil Nadu , Kerala , West Bengal , Assam & north eastern states & propagate hindi language there as they too are part of India.

100's of innocent Hindi speaking labours have been killed in Assam but no politicians opened their mouth to criticise at least & also we people when it comes to stars we will criticise but for poor man only GOD save them.

We can't find a single hindi speaking guy in Tamilnadu, does this make a some sort of sense???? But our politicians instead of making all these issues, they should concentrate on the real issues India facing now...may be a better idea only if they think.

Prashanth and Muthalib You Both are wrong. The Britishers United India with One Language. We Indians had Lot of Maharajhs and many languages which was removed by Britishers. If Britishers wanted to distroy India they could have easily done so by giving the Kingdoms to these Maharajhs and there would not have been United India. Read the ancient history of India.

I agree with Muthalib, I really find it funny when I see the comments on the pages. for a simple issue lot of comments then it will become communual throughout the comment and thus we boil our blood. We have to just read and forget if possible try to console the other community instead dont put a ghee on a fire. after all life is short so enjoy every bit of it. love all the communities. We cannot avoid people who are in bombing the innocent, people who are into conversion activities, people who involve into unnecessary activities... life has to go on and on

Generally to say here that in a multilingual society like India people should not have love for one particular language. We have to encourage our children to learn as much languages as they can and in my opinion there is nothing wrong in any other languages. All languages are having its own goodness and sweetness which will be evident only a person understand and start to converse in those languages. Moreover, learning other languages will never be a burden to any one instead a benefit to develop his or her carrier. Regionalism will be a dangerous disease and an Indian citizen can live anywhere in India. Nobody should hinder or obstruct. If doing so should be punished through court law which is imminent and imperative.

Raju Saheb (Raj Thackeray) we all are Indians. Let us have that spirit. We do not dis-agree with you. You control Maharastra. Let other states develop like your state. Guide them and guard them for some time. If they turn lazy, chase them out from Maharashtra.

Political parties propogate 'Bhoomi-Putra' or 'Maatra-Basha' for their own gains. Local poeple are simply puppets dancing to the tunes of these politicians. For example, if one learns only local language (i.e. Marathi in Maharashtra) what if they venture out of their state ? Granted one knows Marathi & Hinda but no English - what will he do if has to venture out of India ?

Have you met a Tamil on international level ? He is ashamed of not knowing to read/write Hindi ! Common people ! Decide what is needed for your children - do not go by the trumpt blown by the politicians.

Film personalities settle in Mumbai because it is home for Hindi Films with huge studios like Filmstan, Mehboob, etc. Producing a Hindi Film outside Mumbai would be a cumbersome job. Why does MNS does not want film personalities settle in Mumbai ? Are they not law-abiding ? Aren't they paying their taxes ? Don't they pay the cost of any property they buy ?

Going by MNS, only Maharashtrians should gain from what is available in that state. What about items that are not available in Maharashtra ? Is he saying that the state is self-reliant ? What if BSE decides to shift the base ? What about ONGC / Tata / Ambani or any other houses move away from Mumbai owing to MNS troubles ? What if no Hindi-film based fraternities exist anymore in Maharashtra ? Will the people have to watch only Marathi Films ?

Maharashtrians be aware ! You may not be only Hindus - there are Christian/Muslim Maharashtrians. Today he is provoking you people on regional basis. Tomorrow it may transform into religion basis. Beware of whom you are supporting !

Ban all languages and introduce and enforce English as the only language across the land.Scrap all states and divide them with straight lines only for administrative purposes. This regionalism has made us forget that we are Indians first. Therefore even though my suggestion seems crazy, under the present circumstances it is the best one available.
